2021 Chair Affair – Pathways to Housing
Spring brings one of our favorite annual events: it’s time for the 2021 Chair Affair to benefit Pathways to Housing and the Philadelphia Furniture Bank! This year’s event is a hybrid, with an in-person, socially distanced exhibit at the Cherry Street Pier and an online silent auction. We’re really excited for our 2021 entry, which Andrea designed and executed with an assist from a local textile artist.
What is the Chair Affair?
For the Chair Affair, we select a piece that’s been donated to the Philadelphia Furniture Bank and transform it. The redesigns go up for auction at the gala, and winners take home one-of-a-kind chairs, furniture, and artwork! Pathways does critical work in Philadelphia for people transitioning from homelessness, especially with its furniture bank. We share the belief that “home is more than four walls,” and it’s an honor to support their mission.
For our 2021 Chair Affair piece, Andrea wanted to keep the integrity of the chair and draw attention to the fabulous caned back. It had a beautiful silhouette and just the right amount of vintage feel.
After deciding to paint the frame, she selected a subtle green-gray shade. The softness of the paint color allowed the caning to really pop.
Next: goodbye, mustard velveteen cushion! For the new cushion, Andrea teamed up with her friend, a local artist who uses natural dyes on linen. The earthy leaf pattern adds an organic element that enhances the natural texture of the woven cane back.
Once the design was finalized, we sent our chair to our upholsterer to work their magic. Next stop, the Furniture Bank for the final drop off!
The silent auction opens on April 2nd and closes on April 22nd. To see our chair and all of the other pieces, visit the Cherry Street Pier from April 2nd through the 16th.
