Philadelphia Kitchen Remodel

When our clients reached out to us about remodeling their Philadelphia kitchen, we jumped at the project.  As part of a home that has stood for over a century, it had some unique features and interesting challenges.  We really love the final design and our clients do, too!

The existing kitchen was closed in by a wall that housed a wide tall cabinet at the entry point, making it feel cramped.  The layout offered limited counter space for the two cooks in the house, with appliances spaced in an inefficient way for cooking and meal prep. It was simply too congested for two people to be cooking a meal together.

Their must-have list included nixing the dated look and creating cohesion and organization.  We removed the dividing wall in order to open the kitchen both visually and spatially, and needed to find a way to retain the storage that existed on that wall.  Removal of the wall allowed for seating and storage, which allowed natural light from the windows to flood the room.

Because they wanted more counter space for meal prep, we opted for an integrated microwave versus their previous countertop setup.  We changed the layout of the other GE appliances as well to make them more accessible and create a better flow.  The range and hood were moved between the windows to create a focal point when entering the space, while the sink was moved to underneath the glass cabinetry.  Finally, we moved the refrigerator to where the existing table was for ease of movement.

Having an eat-in kitchen was very important to our clients.  We created the peninsula shown in our header photo where the wall had previously stood, using half-depth cabinetry to allow for an overhang with seating and Cambria quartz for the countertop.  The interior side of the peninsula contains storage, with an open bookshelf capping the end of the cabinetry.

Additionally, we converted the existing back porch into a laundry room with a stacked washer and dryer and a powder room.  The same half depth cabinetry was installed with the quartz top to provide more storage for laundry and garden tools, and a countertop work surface.

Our clients were kind enough to answer a couple of questions about their project.  We loved getting their perspective on what it’s like to design a space together, and how they felt about the project.

GSID:  What is your favorite thing about your new kitchen?

Clients:  It’s impossible to pick just one thing!  In addition to being beautiful, our kitchen is very functional.  Glenna offered us several different plans that made great use of our limited space, and the one we selected created a kitchen that is exactly what we hoped for.  Literally every day, we appreciate the ease of use of our kitchen and its gorgeous appearance.

GSID:  What did you enjoy the most about our design process and working with us?

Clients:  We loved working with Glenna.  She got to know us and our style right away, and made suggestions of materials for countertop, tile and flooring that were a perfect fit.  Glenna brought us sample materials that she thought we would like, and this helped narrow an otherwise overwhelming field.  We absolutely love what we chose from amongst Glenna’s recommendations, and this is what has made our kitchen a perfect space for us.
