Fashion Week for Furnishings: Trends and Topics from the World’s Largest Market

Speaker Of The House

If you are a follower of this blog, you know that Glenna is asked to represent GSID and, more broadly, professional interior designers, at numerous events and industry-only shows. With nearly 68,000 people in the US designated as interior designers, it is coup for anyone to be elevated to speaker status at the professional level. At the just-completed semi-annual High Point Market, Glenna was on stage for—not one, but two—presentations. We think she’s a design rock star and, it seems, so do lots of other people.

When not educating the industry at the High Point Market, Glenna spent countless hours seeing the latest home furnishings, accessories, lighting, rugs, art and antiques. She met with her preferred vendors to ensure she and the GSID team have the most current resources and information for their homeowner-clients. And, she sourced some simply stunning new finds that will make their way into our beloved clients’ homes very soon.

Let’s follow along with Glenna as she reveals her top trends and topical talks from High Point.

Designers from around the country came to hear Glenna and her panel partners provide hints and tips to reshape designers’ success in sourcing and procuring the perfect products for their projects.

Shout outs to John McClain, Jeanne Chung, and Mike Yates who offered great ideas and shared incredible knowledge.

Like Glenna, many top designers took unexpected journeys to get to their design career destination. This panel included a former Broadway performer, a criminal prosecutor, an engineer, a paint scientist, a corporate HR executive and an accounting pro. Do you know which one was Glenna’s former gig?

Bob Gaynor, Tobi Fairley, Denise Gordon, Robin Gannon, and Tiffany Cassidy  were the amazing professionals on this panel alongside Glenna. To say each of them had a unique perspective borne from the twists and turns on their way to design success would be a vast understatement. The audience was alternately rapt with attention or rolling from laughter.

Trio of Top Trends to Try

When you see as many showrooms and resources as we do, trends begin to reveal themselves. Glenna selected these three emerging trends that she thinks will have staying power with stylish selections in the months and years ahead.

  1. Marble Everything

A mix of marble with reeded and banded wood in this stunning console.

Marble is having its moment. Glenna saw it in so many showrooms and used in some fabulous ways—tables, consoles, lighting, accents and more. Above, Fairfield showed one way the beauty of marble can be incorporated.  See a sampling of more stunning stonework below.

Color, veining and shape are outstanding on this side table.

This marble coffee table from Vanguard would be an eye-catching addition for traditional, transitional and contemporary spaces.

Arteriors gets another nod for this lamp with a marble base. So chic.
Speaking of lighting, Glenna swooned over these marble and brass chandeliers from our friends at Hudson Valley Lighting.

  2. Clad in Plaid

There’s a plaid revolution in seating items. From tartans to windowpane designs to checks, plaid is showing up in a big way. It’s been a hit with fashion, so why not use it at home?

Here’s a different take on plaid this market. We love it.

Our friends at Vanguard upholstered these small stools in a multi-brown plaid pattern.

  3. Texture is in and Wicker’s the Way

Palecek is known for a mastery of woven materials. We are in wholehearted agreement seeing these wicker-wrapped ottomans and storage vessels.

Palecek also presented a multitude of updated wicker trays and other accessories.
Of course, wicker lighting is huge. These options from Hudson Valley Lighting show that wicker can be done with refinement. The sconce is especially fun.
The patterned weave on this incredibly comfortable and lovely chair from Arteriors grabbed Glenna’s eye.

While trends come and go, on-trend items like the ones you’ve just seen, have real staying power. We think you will see these and their trend-right companions for years to come.

Thanks for hanging out at the High Point Market with us. Have questions about the future of furnishings? Drop them in the comments below.
