Center City Philadelphia Home

Center City Philadelphia features so many unique houses, so we were thrilled to design a home in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood. Recently gutted and renovated, it offered a blank canvas for clients who chose the location for its proximity to downtown entertainment and dining options. The finished design is a combination of midcentury modern, modern, and eclectic style that reflects the interests and personalities of the couple who call it home!

Interior details

As the couple began a new chapter of their lives in the vibrant downtown section of Philadelphia, it was important to them to create a beautiful home that reflected their lifestyle and hobbies.  They also wanted to incorporate some existing furnishings and accents, but in a refreshed way that blended seamlessly with a modern look.  With that in mind, we chose a lot of new, custom pieces to add throughout the home.  The finished design is polished without being fussy, and cohesive without being boring.

In the living room, different textures create an unexpected combination of luxury and welcoming comfort.  Natural light from the bay window plays across the velvet sofa, chairs, and custom bench.  The living room is home to one of two turntable sound systems featuring part of the couple’s collection of vinyl albums. Finishing touches like the marble and brass floor lamp, mirrored coffee table, and nailhead sofa trim showcase a love of details. It’s a beautiful, luxe, yet relaxing space.  You can imagine yourself enjoying a martini and chatting while a record plays in the background.

The dining room table and chairs were from their previous home, but we updated the chairs’ upholstery to fit with the modern aesthetic of the room.  A mod brass light fixture above the table is reminiscent of retro models of the solar system.  On the dining room wall, an original painting complements the gold accents in the downstairs space.  These metallic hints throughout are a subtle, upscale touch that ties the design together throughout.

On the second floor, the den features a custom media cabinet with another turntable, again bringing in their shared passion for music and their ever-growing collection of vinyl.  The opposite wall features a gallery wall of their own black-and-white photographs (another hobby that was important to incorporate). Using these personal photos was the ideal way to create a focal point with meaning that can be shared with guests.

Beneath the photos, a comfortable custom sectional with a chaise doubles as a pull-out bed for guests. We opted for a sophisticated gray palette that echoes the tones in the photography.  The centerpiece of the room is a custom, glass-topped round coffee table that shows off the architectural base.

The cozy third floor office features an alcove perfect for its custom desk and chair. An antique wooden spindle from a local factory, another piece in the couple’s personal art collection, takes a place of honor next to the abstract silver leaf lamp on top of the custom storage chest.  The dotted area rug adds an unexpected element of fun.

A Center City oasis

Their bi-level roof deck is spectacular, with a 360 degree view that includes the iconic Philadelphia skyline along with the Ben Franklin and Walt Whitman bridges arching over the Delaware river. The cozy outdoor sectional is an ideal spot for morning coffee or entertaining in the warmer months.  We also added a custom high top table with bar stools for extra seating, creating a perfect rooftop oasis!  Click here to see the amazing view, along with the rest of the project!
