Choosing a sink style

Earlier this year, we discussed how to select your kitchen sink material; today we’re pivoting to choosing a sink style!  We’re not just focusing on the kitchen here, although we will talk about those.  A sink is one of the hardest working features in your home, whether it’s in the powder room or the laundry room, but you can make a stylish statement with whichever you choose.

Our favorite sink styles

Undermount

Perfect for: kitchen, bathroom, small spaces (laundry room, wet bar)

Undermount sinks are a popular classic for good reason.  This style sits under the counter top (hence the name) and offers a more seamless look.    Available in a range of shapes, sizes, materials, and configurations, an undermount sink fits into almost any design.  Many of our kitchen clients opt for a stainless steel undermount, a timeless choice with durability.

You can also opt for a double bowl, perfect for home chefs who love extra space to prep or those who clean as they go.

For smaller areas, like a wet bar or upstairs laundry room, an undermount allows for more counter space than a drop in sink and a sleeker profile than an apron front.

In bathrooms, it again maximizes space, which makes it the ideal choice for a vanity with double sinks.  This style also allows for easier cleaning – the combination of beauty and lower maintenance is a win-win!

Farmhouse/apron front

Perfect for: kitchen, mudroom/laundry room

Farmhouse sinks have seen a resurgence in recent years, appearing everywhere from HGTV to magazine pages to our clients’ homes. The classic enameled cast iron apron front sink complements a variety of aesthetics – you don’t have to have a farmhouse kitchen to have a farmhouse sink!  This style works well in traditional, transitional, and even contemporary designs.  For those who want something more modern with the space and visual statement of an apron front, there are options in stainless steel, brass, copper, and natural stone.

Another fantastic location for a farmhouse sink?  The mudroom.  A deep, wide, hardworking sink is exactly what you need after gardening, mowing the lawn, or chasing the dog through a muddy puddle.  We also like them in larger laundry rooms, particularly on the first floor where you have the space for a full utility sink.  Sometimes, the mudroom/laundry room is a combo space which makes a large farmhouse sink a real problem solver.

Pedestal

Perfect for: powder room

This compact style is a popular option for a powder room, especially in homes like condominiums or townhomes where every inch counts.  Our work on historic city homes often involves maximizing the small footprint of these powder rooms, where they’re either a fairly recent addition or one that we’re designing.  Pedestal sinks are an efficient use of space and span a number of styles, from architectural 1920s-inspired designs to sleek, ultra-modern silhouettes.
