Coastal style and beach chic

Did you know that January-February is the perfect time to kick off your beach house design project?  Starting the process now means that your shore house will be ready for you to enjoy come June!  We love summer, coastal style, and the opportunities to design fabulous homes at the beach.  So, what does coastal style mean to us?

Coastal style with beach chic

When we talk about coastal style, we don’t mean seashell drapes and dolphin lamps.  Instead, think of varying blues, creamy neutrals, light woods, and comfortable upholstered seating.  Your shore home should be a place for you to get away and relax, but at the same time offer the conveniences of your primary home.  We love a large dining table for dinner with guests and cozy chairs for long conversations over drinks.  Natural materials like jute, rope, linen, and canvas have an upscale beachy vibe that will see you through many summers.

We enjoy finding the intersection of relaxed and elevated for these spaces to inspire a sense of both beauty and welcome.  You want your beach house to look fabulous, but to also be a place where friends and family can chill out and have a great time.  In the living room, a large coffee table offers a great spot for pre-dinner cocktails or a rainy day game marathon.  Light washed wood gives it a driftwood vibe.

Going completely neutral also allows for a restful space.  If you have room for a breakfast nook, opting for a round table and cream upholstered chairs (with performance fabric, of course) gives you a quiet spot for morning coffee before the hustle and bustle of packing up for the beach or heading out to meet up with friends.

Don’t forget the details

Guests, sometimes unexpected, mean a need for extra seating.  We love small ottomans or stools that can be tucked under a table or against a wall until a neighbor drops by with a pitcher of her famous mango margaritas and everyone wants to pull up a seat!  We also recommend indoor/outdoor rugs for dining areas, natural woven blinds to diffuse summer sunlight, and low maintenance surfaces.  If you have to bring the barbecue chicken or seafood boil inside due to weather, you don’t want to worry about spills and drips.  Our job is to think of everything and then work it seamlessly into the design so that your down-the-shore sanctuary is exactly that.
