Design details: Mirrors

This week, we’re talking about one of our favorite design details: mirrors!  If you’re familiar with our work, you may have noticed how frequently we incorporate them.  As one of the most versatile elements in design, we’ve layered them into spaces from entries to kitchens.  There’s the practical aspect of checking your appearance, of course, especially while you’re getting ready in the morning or before you head out the door to dinner with friends.  Mirrors also enhance the effect of bouncing light throughout a room, which makes even narrow halls or small foyers seem bigger and brighter.

In this Plymouth Meeting dining room, we added an oversized mirror across from the large windows for both symmetry and to reflect light, which adds to the airy vibe of the space.  It plays off of the clean lines of the furnishings and artwork as well.

Using mirrors to create the optical illusion of more space is a classic design approach, and for good reason.  When we redesigned our Willows Park kitchen, we integrated a mirrored backsplash in the new wine bar to enhance the newly bright, open feeling that was so important to our clients.

Mirrors can also double as art, such as this elegantly fabulous mirror above the sideboard in our West Chester dining room.  We love how it echoes the subtle circle pattern on the paperweave wallpaper for an elevated aesthetic.

Finally, don’t underestimate the element of fun that a colorful mirror can lend to a space!  Our Wyndmoor clients wanted a bathroom that their young daughters could share and grow into.  Hot pink mirrors aren’t your typical bathroom accent, but these bold frames will feel sophisticated yet playful for years to come.
