Design details: Texture

As we noted in our High Point Market roundup, texture is one of the design trends right now!  From seating to casegoods to lighting, the combination of visual and tactile interest is everywhere.

Why do we think texture has become such a standout design detail?  Quite simply, more time spent at home means that clients have had the opportunity to focus on ways to express their personality through furnishings and decor.  Instead of having pieces that are just “good enough” for now, they’re investing in items that add functionality and make them happy in their home.

Upholstery

The biggest splash for texture has been in upholstered goods.  Comfort and livability are key elements, and vendors have responded with plush pillows, woven fabrics, and embroidered detailing.   Settees, chaises, and sectionals invite you to curl up and relax.  Besides that tactile stimulation coming from velvets, tweeds, and boucles, the fun and interest of a furry pillow (like the one in the top photo that I spied at the Verellen showroom) or carved cane back adds a wow factor to your space!

Casegoods

Texture isn’t just for seating, though.  Casegoods – tables, chests, dressers, and desks – are also showing off cool textural details.  Why settle for a dresser with simple drawer pulls when you could have sculpted metal or handstitched leather instead?  Add a pop of personality to the living room with an artfully handcrafted cocktail table like this rattan piece from Arteriors!  We love how the pattern plays against the stone accessories and buttery leather sofa.

Lighting

When you think of table lamps, do you picture something plain?  If yes, then expand your thinking.  Texture is also showing up in lighting in a big way.  We’ve seen hints in the globes and shades on chandeliers and pendants before.  Now, even your nightstand or desk lamp can get a punch of style with a textured body!  We really love the earthy vibe in this carved ceramic lamp, and would add it to a guest room for interest.
