Design trends: Fall 2020

As we do every October, we’re talking about trends!  Our vendor partners have provided amazing virtual, digital, and print resources that allow us to keep our finger on the pulse of what’s new. This year, our design team has selected our favorite design trends for fall 2020 and beyond.

I love statement wallpapers, and they’re definitely big right now.  In particular, abstract wallpapers that double as art are so cool!  The just-debuted Awakening collection from Phillip Jeffries is full of color, texture, and larger-scale patterns.  These are such a great way to make a space pop, from powder rooms to entries.  As a matter of fact, I have one in mind for a client!

I feel like natural textures are everywhere, even more so than in the spring.  It’s almost like there’s this tactile need to connect interiors to nature and the elements.  This doesn’t just apply to furnishings either, although I’ve seen it in seating, side tables, and furniture inlays.  Accents, decor, and lighting are leaning into the trend as well.  Palecek has always done this so well, but they’ve leveled up when it comes to refined details.  A great example is the construction and finishing on the Bolero lounge chair.  It not only features a rattan frame wrapped with jute, but also brass caps at each end of the crown for a really polished look.

I’m seeing more colors, particularly in patterns.  Color blocking, herringbone, stripes, with a lot of mixing and matching to create visual texture and really just to have fun.  One of the most interesting aspects of interior design is finding that perfect pattern combination in a room, where they can play off of each other and capture a client’s personality and style.  Jane Churchill for Cowtan and Tout is really kicking it up a notch!

I’ve been getting a lot of retro-inspired vibes from colors, shapes, and forms – almost a little happy and playful feeling!  I love what Made Goods is doing with accessories like stools, drink tables, lamps, and planters.  The Murni stool in resin comes in a range of fun, vibrant colors that make me think of jewelry and sunglasses from the 1960s.

Which of these trends would you love to bring into your home?
