What’s hot in design trends for 2020
Curved sofas
Curved seating is a GSID favorite; there’s something about it that feels intimate and welcoming, almost like a hug. We’re thrilled to see curved sofas taking center stage at our vendors! Who wouldn’t want to get cozy on this Thomas Pheasant sofa? The vibe is perfect for watching a movie with the lights out or curling up with a great novel.
Light brown wood tones
As we noted in our Fall Market roundup, warmer woods have taken center stage. We see light brown tones in every space from dining tables to dressers to accent tables (like the Century table in the header, new in our showroom!). These work with a variety of aesthetics – it doesn’t matter if you lean transitional or industrial, light brown fits in perfectly. We love the Finch coffee table from Vanguard.
Palms, ferns, and tropical vibes
Green is popping up in patterns and prints, particularly palms and ferns. If you can’t hop on a plane to a beautiful beach, you can bring some of that vibe in with an upholstered ottoman or drapery panels. The fresh, modern take on tropical motifs is the perfect way to add a pop to your space.
Geometric patterns
Geometry may not have been your favorite subject in school, but its popularity can’t be denied! We’re seeing asymmetric lines in furniture and art. You may have even seen the art form known as “tape resist” in sidewalk chalk in your neighborhood. The mosaic-type effect is achieved through one of two techniques, either marquetry or parquetry, using pieces of wood veneer to create patterns on the face of furniture pieces. The Theodore Alexander Iconic collection is the coolest example of this!
Watercolors
For those who prefer a softer look, watercolor patterns and motifs are washing over fabric and wallcoverings. Soothing pastels create a relaxed feeling with an airiness and light. We love this for a bedroom, breakfast room, or home office.
