Gift Guide: Holiday gifts for everyone on your list

Are you eating leftover turkey right now and thinking “Holiday gifts already?”  It may seem like jumping the gun, but Hanukkah begins on the evening of December 2nd and Christmas is  just over three weeks after that.  Most importantly, tomorrow is Small Business Saturday, and we love supporting local Philadelphia small businesses when we buy holiday gifts.  Check out our picks for 2018!

Holiday Gifts 2018

The music enthusiast

We all know someone who collects vinyl, but buying a record they don’t already have can be tricky.  Our solution? Art in the Age offers Booze and Vinyl, a stylish book pairing 70 albums with the perfect libation.  Each entry features album-specific liner notes and cocktail recipes.

The eco-conscious kitchen wizard

Don’t think that dish towels can be pretty?  The beautiful Shibori floursack dish towels by Flora Poste Studio will prove you wrong.  Kendra Lebo uses vegetable-based dyes and textiles from sustainable, fair-trade mills to create each towel.  The ancient Japanese hand-dyeing technique means that every one is unique.  We think you’ll want to give one of every color and possibly grab a couple for yourself!  Bonus: less paper towel use.

The diehard Philadelphian

Coasters are a favorite gift because they can be be beautiful or fun.  Philadelphia Independents stocks these cork coasters modeled after Philadelphia manhole covers.  They’re the perfect way for a lifelong Philly resident to show off hometown pride, while keeping their Yards or Dock Street bottles from leaving rings on the furniture.

The art lover

We’ve blogged about incorporating art into your home a few times, and as we’ve noted, tastes are very personal.  Purchasing artwork as a gift can be a gamble. However, a gift certificate to a local framer makes a thoughtful gift for that someone who has a passion for collecting!  Skilled framers can create everything from a classic frame with museum glass for treasured photos or prints to shadowboxes for memorabilia like concert tickets or programs.

The farmers’ market devotee

Whether it’s for baking, smoothies, or snacks, we all know someone who loves hitting up the farmers’ market or co-op for fresh fruit every week.  The minimalist ceramic Prong fruit bowl from Moon + Arrow gently cradles apples, citrus, or bananas on the table or countertop.  You may not be able to give the gift of health, but you can encourage it with style!

Tea drinkers take their beverages seriously and often have a ritual around making the perfect cup.  Luckily, Vault + Vine has the perfect Tea Drinker Gift Set.  It includes a locally crafted mug, a tin of the Random Tea Room blend of your choice, and a reusable linen tea bag.  It’s just the thing for chilly winter nights or relaxing weekend mornings!  (Have a coffee drinker on your list?  Check out their Coffee Drinker Gift Set.)

Don’t forget the card!

Gifts are obviously fun, but adding the perfect card is the cherry on top of the giving sundae.  Philadelphia’s own Groundswell Greetings is a collective that offers funny, witty, and unique greeting cards designed by independent artists.  GG’s cards are available in several local shops, but through the end of the year you can order directly from their website.  For those who like to celebrate the season, there is an assortment of all-encompassing “happy holidays” cards.  If you prefer Christmas or Hanukkah-specific cards, there are sections for those too!  Even better, you can purchase packs if you’re the type who likes to mail good tidings and cheer.

Happy shopping, and don’t forget to support your local small businesses this season!
