How to style a console
Sometimes you get the urge to change things up a bit at home. One of the easiest ways to give a space a refresh is by styling (or restyling) your console table. What we love most about a console is its versatility. This furniture piece adds style in an entry, a dining room, a home office, or even a hallway. Best of all, you can mix in existing and new pieces for a fresh look. Here are our top tips for how to style a console!
Add a focal point
When your console is against a wall, hanging artwork above it makes a great focal point and adds vertical balance. You can opt for one large piece or do a gallery layout, as long as it feels proportional. Other cool focal point ideas are a unique mirror or vintage wall clock. See how Olivia took our console from lonely to lovely with this first step!
Use the rule of 3s
The “rule of 3s” or “rule of thirds” is a common one in design. To put it simply, groups of three are visually stimulating and satisfy our brains’ need to find patterns in things. This is why you’ll often see variations of it in everything from fine photography to retail displays. When it comes to accessorizing at home, keep that guideline in the back of your mind while you mentally divide your console into thirds. Then, start placing pieces in each third. Create an anchor in each third, like a stack of books, textured pottery, or something with height. Olivia used candlesticks here to subtly tie in the brass finish on the console door pulls.
Once you’ve established a solid base, we recommend layering in fresh florals or greenery. The preserved moss in the textured bowl is a pretty, organic touch, and adding a pop of color with stalks of late-summer yarrow in a simple white vase just feels happy in this space. By keeping it low-key, it’s easy to change out the flowers each week with a few blooms from your garden (or the market) and not fuss too much.
Finally, layer in smaller accents to fill gaps and add personality. A favorite scented candle, a treasured memento from that once-in-a-lifetime vacation, or a sentimental photo are all great accessories. Get creative with it; we framed a cool fabric sample for this vignette to create a mini piece of art. It’s your space, so do whatever makes you happy!
