Inviting dining rooms for every day

Dining rooms have a reputation for being formal and fussy, but we embrace them!  Whether it’s a holiday celebration or weeknight family dinners, a dedicated space to gather is a great way to focus on both your food and company.  We love helping our clients create homey dining rooms for every day!

Our must haves for comfortable dining rooms

We love round dining tables, because they create a more casual and intimate vibe.  Without the traditional “head” and “foot,” things are more relaxed and you can squeeze an extra seat in if need be.  We all know the struggle of trying to fit someone into a corner of a rectangular table, right?  No one wants to eat with a 90 degree angle poking them in the abdomen.  Another bonus to a round table?  It makes the room itself feel less cramped.  Our favorites have the option of adding leaves to become ovals, and we’ve spotted some cool telescoping designs that expand to a wider diameter!

Seating has evolved from formal, stiff-backed chairs, too!  Upholstered parsons chairs and cozy settees give you something to settle into for conversation over your meal.    Don’t feel like you need a perfectly matched set if that’s not your taste.  Do you want a bench on one side with chairs on the other?  Go for it!  Coordinate fabrics and finishes to pull it all together, but choose designs that fit your lifestyle. Do you remember the formal china cabinet that was a staple of so many dining rooms?  It’s out.  Storage is still important, especially if you have large serving pieces, good stemware that you reserve for guests, or extra table linens.  Instead, opt for a sideboard or buffet where you can tuck these things out of sight.  Many of these can be customized, whether it be for size, finish, color, or hardware.  It’s a great way to tailor a large piece to the feel of your dining room.  As a bonus, you can display photos or art on the top, or create a home bar for entertaining.

Last but not least, think about lighting.  What kind of mood do you want?  For a more laid back room, consider a pair of pendant lights in lieu of a large chandelier to create a modern look that isn’t overwhelming.  Sconces contribute soft light from the walls and are a perfect combination to flank a mirror or artwork over a buffet.

Are you rethinking your idea of dining rooms?  We’d love to help you design yours!
