Let’s get ready for fall!

As much as we hate to admit it, summer 2021 is coming to a close and it’s time to get ready for fall.  Back to school signifies a return to routine even for those of us without kids (can you say traffic?), and we have some tips to help you transition at home.

How to get ready for fall (even if you’re not really ready)

With school starting up again, expect everything to get a bit more hectic.  Not only will kids be in class and then attending activities, but businesses will be out of “summer mode” and you’ll probably be busier at work. A few simple adjustments can make a big difference and help you enjoy your home to the fullest!

Get it together

Having dedicated space in your home for everything is key to getting and staying organized.  Shoes, bags, and papers seem to multiply if left out in the open, so set up stations in your home.  Assign cubbies or bins in the mudroom for each person so that you aren’t scrambling to find soccer cleats or an umbrella five minutes after you needed to be out the door.  No space for a mudroom?  A storage bench can serve the same purpose in a foyer, laundry room, or even the garage.  Hooks are an easy solution for backpacks, hats, and even the dog’s leash.  Keeping things in a “drop zone” will ensure they don’t take over the rest of the house, especially once jackets, coats, and boots make their way into the rotation.

Look ahead

For many of us, the calendar and the weather don’t necessarily tell the same story.  Even though fall officially begins in late September, summer temperatures can linger for weeks after.  Take advantage of that by prepping your home for cooler days.  Whether you outsource landscaping or enjoy tending to your garden, planters, and shrubs yourself, now is the time to get those ready.  As for transitioning your outdoor space from summer to fall, check out the tips we shared with Martha Stewart!  This is also the ideal time to schedule appointments for HVAC and fireplace maintenance, arrange for carpet and rug cleaning, and launder your heavier winter bed linens in anticipation of longer, colder nights.

Wardrobe change

Speaking of prepping for the change of seasons, you’ll want to get ahead of the game and start rotating your clothing.  This doesn’t mean that you have to put away all of your sleeveless tops and start wearing cashmere sweaters, of course.  With that said, it’s a good idea to see if there’s anything that no longer fits or went unworn in the last six months and create a pile for donation.  With more room in your drawers and closets, take note of any nagging issues you might have with your current setup.  You might realize that you want to turn your walk in closet into a dressing room to make getting ready easier.  Think about the ways that you already utilize things like shoe storage or coat closets and then consider how they can be improved.  And don’t forget to drop off that donation bag or schedule a pick up!

We hope this puts you in the mood to get ready for fall and embrace sweater weather, crunchy leaves, and everything pumpkin and apple that’s coming our way!
