They envisioned a space tailored to their lifestyle—comfortable for everyday living, yet elevated to host gatherings with ease. The home, rich in character and architectural detail, provided a beautiful foundation. We drew inspiration from its unique features, such as the graceful curve of the arched front doorway and the original custom built-ins. These elements informed a design approach that feels fresh and contemporary while honoring the home’s heritage. Working in thoughtful phases, we began with the main floor’s shared living spaces, the office, and the primary suite. Throughout, we prioritized a balance of form and function—introducing a warm, neutral palette layered with tactile fabrics, curated artwork, statement lighting, and tailored furnishings. Each selection was made with intention, marrying aesthetic appeal with the durability required for a growing family. While the overall palette remains calm and cohesive, we brought each room to life through the strategic use of texture, pattern, and subtle pops of color. The result is a timeless, transitional interior that feels collected and effortless—classic at its core, with refined “wow” moments that surprise and delight. In collaboration with the architect, we created a transformed layout of rooms that suited the flow of the family’s activity. Throughout the home, cool neutrals and shades of blue and pale pink set a calm and welcoming tone, while the architecture and furnishings provide a more modern and approachable appeal grounded in traditional roots. The result of this down-to-the-studs renovation is a home that is perfectly modern and welcoming.   Architect: Krieger + Associates Builder: E. B. Mahoney Builders Landscape Designer: Hess Landscape Architects With a deep love of design and an eye for detail, we create radiant interiors inspired by our clients’ lives. --- Published in Traditional Home magazine, this Gladwyne home was designed for a couple who moved from a Center City condo with their growing family. With much more space, they wanted a home that balanced family-friendly living with statement design elements throughout. Color, subtle patterns, and texture influence the mood of each room with contemporary elements throughout.  The dining room, powder rooms, and entryway feature statement moments that were created through architectural detailing, lighting, and the use of decorative wallpaper and bold color. The great room, kitchen, and breakfast room have neutral palettes, creating more casual retreat spaces.  The home office/library has a bold and vibrant palette to foster happiness and creativity.  The second-floor outdoor balcony allows for various seating options and layers of pattern for a quiet place to read, work, or simply take a moment to enjoy the views. The primary suite features a custom calacatta marble bathroom with an adjoining coffee bar clad in a bold, jewel-toned metallic wallcovering. The children’s bedrooms are designed to grow with them and nurture their imaginations. Balancing livability and elevated design details throughout, the interior design of this home resulted in a beautiful, contemporary, and thoughtfully designed family residence.   Builder: Cervone Contracting Landscape Designer: Hess Landscape Architects Design is a way of restoring the spirit and strengthening our connections to one another. --- We were honored to work with our clients on the interior design of their ground-up, gracious, new-modern farmhouse in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Looking for a custom home that blended their two families, we used our talents to craft a unique and inviting home that focused on luxury detailing. The homeowners’ desire for pieces that were sculptural, unique, and different allowed us to exercise our full creative skill set for finishes and furnishings. Starting with the interior finishes, we selected materials that suited both the style of the home and our clients’ aesthetic. The furnishings selections focused on artful shapes with unique details highlighting a mix of materials. For the second phase, we worked with the landscape architect to beautifully blend the outdoor living and dining areas and pool cabana with the interior aesthetic and outdoor landscape. Our goal was to design a stylish yet timeless home that integrated our clients’ desired aesthetic. Throughout the home we incorporated elements that were contemporary, bold, and organic.   Builder: Fox Lane Homes Landscape Designer: Hess Landscape Architects Great design is about walking into a space and every single time feeling one thing: this is as it should be. --- When our clients moved into their new home in Chestnut Hill with a toddler and plans for growing their family, they wanted a blend of style and livability, identifying the first floor and primary suite as priorities.  The entry is a long hall with a beautiful set of doors leading to the back patio that allows natural light to flood the space.  In the living room, we maximized the seating for family moments as well as entertaining. Two walls of existing beautiful built-ins were painted an accent color and accessorized to make them personal and reflective of the family’s interests and hobbies.  An office was transformed through the selection of a deep blue paint color for a darker, moodier atmosphere.  With the kitchen being the hub of the home, we knew a window seat would be a beautiful spot for the family to dine and designed a custom oval table with a quartzite top, sized perfectly for the bay window in the breakfast nook. Finally, the primary bedroom has a soft, soothing palette of creams and blues.  The window, fireplace, and built-ins created a challenging furniture layout. To implement the perfect furniture plan, we designed a bed flanked by a pair of custom nightstands, allowing the original built-ins to frame the view. The right palette makes objects approach or recede, leaving you endless possibilities for orchestrating layered interactions. --- When our clients and their young children moved into this traditional all-stone residence, they wanted their new home to reflect their personal aesthetic through a mix of old and new. Focusing on the 2nd and 3rd floors, they wanted a playroom to be fit for both children and adults. The artwork above a convertible sofa for guests is bright and happy. Wallpaper with stylized clouds and birds in flight adds a cheerful, bright touch. Inside the closet, floating book rails provide a reading nook with a mirror hanging at the perfect height for playing dress up. The primary bedroom is a restful sanctuary. Custom bed linens, along with a tailored bench at the foot of the bed, lend touches of sophistication. The botanic-inspired chandelier, with its silver leaf finish, is unexpected and playful but with an elegance that fits beautifully with the overall interior design. In the adjacent dressing room, vibrant colors create a contrast to the serenity of the bedroom. We added a dressing table and chair with an eclectic mirror above for interest. Finally, the custom ottoman with its bold magenta trim serves as a functional accent piece and ties into the energetic tones of the area rug. When a home is all about nurturing the imagination, everything becomes an opportunity to play with unexpected combinations. --- Deciding to take up full-time residence in their weekend home, our clients’ priority was to transform the outdated spaces to match their lifestyle and aesthetics. The first challenge was to open up the kitchen to the great room, creating a family-centric living area on the first floor. With a growing family, the two farmhouse sinks and dishwashers provide ample space for cooking, baking prep, and clean-up. A hand-cut glass backsplash tile in custom colors creates a statement focal point and was inspired by the blue-veined quartzite counters. The sunlit morning room opens to the kitchen for easy family dining. The reconfigured butler’s pantry features a one-of-a-kind reclaimed decorative panel from India and glass-fronted cabinets that add layers of interest. Along the back wall, floor to ceiling storage is easily accessible with a library ladder. The mudroom and laundry room were combined into a single functional yet sophisticated space. The mudroom has a combination of open and closed cabinetry and a center bench seat.  We tailored the laundry area with generous cabinets for maximum storage and added a patterned cement tile backsplash to tie the countertops and floor together.  Finally, the family’s beloved dog needed her own space, so we designed a custom dog crate fit for a queen with storage to hold all her important things. Builder: Mack & Roedel When a design works, it takes into consideration the artful blending of materials and textures. --- This New Hope Farmhouse was originally built in 1771 with additions added on either side of the main structure over two centuries. Our task was to redesign the expansive family room, kitchen, and pantry, so we took advantage of the generous natural light that beams through the windows and skylight to create an upscale farmhouse design with a lighter and brighter aesthetic and improved functionality. A quartzite slab backsplash, reconfigured appliance layout, and new cabinetry in crisp white with glass fronts lend a fresh, clean look. The custom island has hidden specialty storage. A concealed coffee bar has antiqued mirrors inset into the cabinetry’s arched panels. The pantry is one of the features of the home that the clients love best; with windows on three sides, it offers views of the drive leading up to the house on one side and the farm on the other. The mosaic-tiled wall surrounding the bay window creates a central focal point above the larger farmhouse sink. By layering texture and pattern throughout the entire space, the result is a cohesive, welcoming, and warm place to gather with family and friends. We love the challenge of transforming homes with a long history and making our clients a special part of their legacy. --- When a young family moves into a new home, the instinct is to knock down walls and tone down the palette so the imagination feels no hard boundaries. In this case, our clients wanted to reimagine the 1st-floor housing foyer, kitchen, family room, living room, and powder room of their classic Penn Valley home by opening up the first floor to better light and flow.  A new eat-in kitchen blends with the previously closed-off family room.  The elevated yet approachable style weaves its way through the finished rooms, using an inviting neutral color palette and subtle touches of natural texture on the comfortable furnishings. Each room is casual yet tailored and can support lively family activities as well as quiet moments alone.   Builder: Rudloff Custom Builders In our work, we endeavor to create spaces that will collect memories throughout our clients’ lives. --- Glenna Stone Interiors Skip to content Interiors Studio Instagram Press Perspectives Inquire Home Interiors Studio Instagram Press Perspectives Inquire Interiors of Effortless Sophistication --- To add a project, create a child page under Interiors or Commercial. --- We believe our homes should be a harmonious marriage of beauty and lifestyle. Our clients envisioned a home that could grow with their family while still feeling elegant enough to host gatherings – a balance of everyday comfort and refined luxury. Transforming an Awkward Space into a Serene, Spacious Primary Suite One of the biggest hurdles was the primary suite. The existing bathroom was undersized and awkwardly shaped, with sloped ceilings limiting ceiling height and usable space. Expanding it without overwhelming the bedroom required a thoughtful approach. By borrowing just a few feet from the bedroom, we were able to more than double the bathroom footprint. The result is a serene retreat featuring a double vanity with a central makeup station, a spacious shower, linen storage, and a separate water closet. Reimagining Layouts for Better Circulation and Family-Friendly Living Flow and functionality were another challenge. The original layout left the dining room too small and the powder room poorly placed. By relocating the powder room to a more central area, we relocated the old dining room to where the breakfast room was located and converted the old dining room to the den and powder room - opened up space for a larger dining room while also improving circulation throughout the first floor. We also carved out a cozy lounge off the kitchen – perfect for coffee in the morning or conversation... --- Well-designed homes evolve with you. Envisioning future needs allows us to build for flexibility. This August, in honor of National Wellness Month, we’re celebrating the profound connection between wellness and the spaces we call home. At Glenna Stone Interiors, aging in place means creating a home that evolves with you–supporting comfort, accessibility, and well-being while remaining true to your personal style. Our work is defined by a passion for pieces with soul: bespoke furnishings, artisan-made décor, and custom elements that infuse every room with story and intention. It’s personal, purposeful, and crafted with extraordinary care. With Albed Rugs, we designed a custom game room area rug and stair runner that anchor the spaces while standing up to everyday life. Philadelphia’s rich heritage in fine furniture making dates back to the earliest days of American craftsmanship, and that tradition remains vibrantly alive... --- With thoughtful outdoor living design, there’s space for recreation, lounging, and enjoying your favorite people. I recently designed an outdoor entertaining space for my own family—one that welcomes flexibility, connection, and impromptu gatherings. With workdays fully scheduled and weekends packed with activities, we craved a space intentionally designed to help us slow down. Our new space does just that—encouraging us to gather, unwind, and enjoy time with the people we love. Why Connection Matters in Design This path winds its way down to our family garden. We always find guests there checking out what veggies, herbs and flowers we’re growing. Science confirms our natural instinct to be together. Strong social bonds improve sleep, lower stress, and even reduce the risk of chronic illness. The simple act of gathering—sharing stories, meals and laughter—directly boost wellbeing. That’s why, when my team and I begin envisioning outdoor living designs, the priority is always connection through intentional space planning. As interior designers, we create purposeful zones: cozy seating for intimate chats, larger lounging areas for entertaining, and tranquil pockets for solo reflection. Whether it’s a screened porch, a firepit lounge, poolside cabana, or a garden pathway, I design and curate spaces to invite interaction and presence. The Power of Materials and Senses Using natural materials in design is a primary focus for me. Whether it’s the wood ceiling, textured pendant shades, or natural marble and slate, we feel more at ease when surrounded by nature’s elements. When designing outdoor spaces, I always strive to strike a balance between beauty and performance. A vast body of evidence supports the positive effects of green spaces and a physical connection to the outdoors—mental restoration, increased positive emotions, rumination and reduced anxiety—reinforcing what many of us have already felt in our own lives. The simple act of spending time outdoors, engaging in a favorite hobby, or going on a simple walk is becoming not just a luxury but an essential part of our well-being. This is especially true for those with high-drive lifestyles, where moments of respite are crucial to maintaining balance. Luxury travel has also shaped the way we think about our homes. Exposure to world-class amenities at five-star resorts inspires us and our clients to bring those experiences into their everyday routines. Whether it’s a spa-like pool area, a meditation or yoga space, or a dedicated court for pickleball, padel, or other games, these elements contribute to a sense of retreat and rejuvenation right at home. Outdoor-adjacent spaces offer significant benefits to wellbeing nearly year-round. Our interaction with the natural environment is evolving. Walking gardens, secluded retreats, and communal gathering spots within our landscapes foster connection—not only with nature but with family, friends, and ourselves. And, it’s the opportunity to add innovative techniques and breathtaking elements that cast a spell over homeowners and our team alike. Collaboration is a cornerstone of our work, and it’s a joy to watch each partner bring their unique strengths to the table. Thoughtfully executed elements are a pleasure for us to present to clients and all their family members. Of course, there’s an intangible element to loving a project as well. It’s the energy that comes from being able to tap into your most creative self—not just for the sake of creativity but in a way... --- Glenna and the GSI team are off and running in 2025 Every year, instead of setting resolutions, I choose a word or phrase that serves as my North Star—a guiding principle to shape my focus for the year ahead. This year, I’ve selected Creating Space as the phrase that will direct my thoughts, actions, and vision for 2025, one that will also act as a beacon for our team and projects. For me, creating space is about intentionally making room—whether it’s clearing mental clutter, finding time to recharge, or helping our clients create homes that reflect a new chapter in their lives. For many of us, the new year represents a fresh start. Turning the page on the calendar always feels significant—my late-year birthday on December 31 adds a personal layer of reflection. I use the metaphorical and actual shift as a chance to reset, embrace new beginnings, and consider how I want to move forward—both personally and professionally. Design dictates that we spend long hours in deep focus. Taking the time and space to recharge and realign is essential. Creating space resonates deeply with me. On a professional level, it influences the projects we take on at Glenna Stone Interiors. Life changes often inspire our clients to renovate their homes. Their spaces become the embodiment of a new season in life, offering an opportunity to align surroundings with aspirations. Our leadership team will use the theme to guide roundtable discussions, refining our approach to design projects and helping clients make room for what... --- As I sit back and reflect on the year, I find myself filled with immense gratitude—for our amazing clients, the incredible projects we've had the privilege to work on, and the partnerships we've built along the way. This year has been full of inspiration, collaboration, and growth, and as we approach the holiday season, I’m taking a moment to appreciate all that we’ve achieved together. At Glenna Stone Interiors, we don’t just design spaces; we design environments where people can feel truly “at home. ” That’s something I think about often, especially after witnessing the joy and appreciation our clients express when their homes are complete. Being in the front row to their gratitude is deeply satisfying—it’s more than just the smiles and giant hug we get on installation day. It’s a heartfelt acknowledgment of the work we’ve done and the life and memories they’ll continue to create in the spaces we’ve designed together. Creating Spaces That Foster Gratitude We are all aesthetes, but our greatest satisfaction is connecting deeply-held feelings of personal comfort, satisfaction and joy to visually stunning spaces. One of the questions I often ask myself—and my team—is whether it’s possible to design a space that reinforces ongoing gratitude. Can a home not only be a place of comfort and style but also a space that nurtures a sense of appreciation, joy and comfort long after the work is done? I think the answer is a resounding “yes. ”  Through our thoughtful and intentional approach to design,... --- Photo as seen in Traditional Home Magazine Interior Design by Glenna Stone Interiors, Photography by John Bessler, Photo Styling by Krissa Rossbund As the holiday season approaches, there’s something truly special about giving gifts that not only show how much you care but also support local businesses and celebrate the unique charm of the Philadelphia area. Not only does... ---  Setting the stage for hosting is of prime consideration. At Glenna Stone Interiors, we understand that creating a beautiful home goes beyond just stunning aesthetics; it's about designing spaces that make every day feel special. And when our clients open their homes to friends, family and colleagues, we strive to make every gathering unforgettable. Often, clients want to enhance their homes for themselves and for hosting; and we’re thrilled to work to bring that vision to life. Designing for gatherings—whether it’s for an intimate dinner party, a casual family get-together, or a grand celebration—allows us to create experiential spaces that create lasting memories. From grand entryways to cozy, well-lit seating areas, our efforts create spaces that welcome guests and make entertaining feel effortless. When we’re designing with hosting in mind, our focus starts with how people will arrive and settle into the home. Planning for entryways, greeting spaces, and even the path from parking to the front door is key. We collaborate closely with architects, builders, and landscape designers to ensure that every detail—from wayfinding lighting to welcoming outdoor landscaping—creates an easy, comfortable arrival experience. The flow from space to space is equally important; we make sure there’s a natural progression from room to room, so guests feel at ease moving from a lively gathering in the living room to a quiet conversation on the patio. Clearly, functionality and layout are essential to draw guests from space to space, but we also must consider color palettes, lighting changes, connections to adjacent... --- Being connected to your environment is a pillar of wellness. Home is far more than a place to live—it can, and should, be the ideal environment to relax, renew and foster overall wellbeing. That’s integral to our work and something we believe every client deserves. Science confirms that physical health, emotional wellbeing and mental wellness are positively impacted by deeply mindful design. In addition to the aesthetic consideration, we believe we have an obligation to provide elements that support homeowners’ current and future wellbeing and sense of overall contentment. How a space feels and how it functions should nurture both the body and mind, promoting comfort, easy integration, and purposefulness. Our approach begins with understanding. We ask our clients specific questions about their health, wellness, and lifestyle needs during onboarding and continue these conversations throughout the design process. We want to know what transforms a space into a retreat, what fuels comfort for the homeowner and how we can integrate those elements into every inch of their home. Beyond that, we listen for cues about other emotions—what sparks joy, calm, delight, creativity. As our senses subconsciously absorb and process our surroundings, we can ensure those spaces evoke positive emotions and physical responses. Personalized fitness spaces that change over time are key. Abundant light and a beautiful view are motivational. For some, integrating healthy body practices is important. Take a current project as an example: our clients wanted a home gym. By diving deep into their fitness routines, we learned about... --- 200 Lex in NYC, home of What's New What's Next Taking part in the venerated What's New What's Next event in New York City has always been an exciting and enriching experience for me. This year, I was honored to be selected again as an Ambassador for the event—the only designer in Philadelphia to hold this accolade. The opportunity to participate as an Ambassador allows me to build even deeper industry connections and to engage with some of the most inspiring designers and top industry professionals across the country. What's New What's Next is a landmark event in the design world, bringing together thought leaders, designers, and innovators to discuss trends, new research, and the future of design. It's a space where I can learn about how firms are managing both macro-level industry shifts and the fine-tuned studio procedures that allow their businesses to thrive. As someone who loves to gather data and understand the design world from a wide-angle perspective, I’m always eager to hear about new business trends, what current research is showing, and how other industry professionals are preparing for the future of design. This “on the ground” information gathering informs our business practices and how we approach each project, in an effort to continuously improve how we serve our clients. Spending time with and exchanging business ideas with the iconic designer, Barbara Barry. This year, in particular, allowed me to take a step back and explore the broader implications of what’s happening in design today—especially around topics... --- Glenna Stone, studio founder and principal. But more than that, kid’s rooms are workhorses when it comes to organization, comfort, and helping support the physical, emotional and psychological needs of the child regardless of age. While children’s spaces may look all light and whimsy, there’s real research and thought put into it all. Take our magic carpet ride through some spaces for tots, teens and adult-adjacents. Early Years Imagination, learning and security often take center stage in smaller children’s spaces like this safari-at-home bedroom Everyone oohs and aahs at this adorable safari-inspired room. It is a reflection of the adventurous spirit of the family’s little one. As the creator of this space we did much more than resource the most adorable stuffed giraffe ever, we added extra padding under the super soft carpet where little feet tread and where, sometimes, falls can happen. We filled the room with storage that can be repositioned and re-used as the child ages up. We added soft seating where our tiny client can snuggle with a parent for story time or enjoy browsing through a book on her own. Walls, windows coverings and flooring were kept intentionally neutral for an easy transition when she’s ready for a more adolescent space. Furnishings and organizational pieces should transition as the child ages. At Home in the Clouds Imagination flies free. Throughout this kid’s space—around the bed, the play area and the special... --- Vacations are wonderful. Resorts have their appeal. When we work with clients who want to enjoy living la dolce vita, we listen intently to how they want to feel, what they want to offer guests, what means ease and enjoyment to them. The results are as individual as the homeowners. Here is a peek at three family homes with outdoor areas that are vacation-worthy every day of the year. Cheers to that. All the Fun, In the Rain or Sun Careful listening gave us the cue to create a covered space for year-round comfort. Our clients in Bryn Mawr love being outdoors as much as possible so their space features a screened room that is warmed by ceiling heaters in the cooler months and open to the fresh air on more temperate days. Of utmost importance: an outdoor chef’s kitchen where the homeowners can whip up a myriad of treats and a suitable outdoor TV area where big games are shown on the weekends. This area, along with the adjacent patio, has become a prime gathering spot. Whether it's family get-togethers with their adult children or gourmet grilled meals with guests, these outdoor rooms are the go-to for good times. The cook is never away from the guests with the outdoor kitchen situated just steps from the dining area and all the entertaining action. What’s more enchanting than cozying up around a fire? This fire pit area throws some seriously snuggly vibes regardless of the season. S’mores optional. Take the... --- Home reveal, Part II Last month, we introduced you to our most recent Bryn Mawr stunner. You toured through the first floor renovations that transformed this home from a standard traditional home to a refreshed and updated space with tons of modern appeal. Quick reminder: we had the pleasure of working with this family on their previous home. They came to us again as they considered moving to better accommodate the latest chapter in their family story. Rather than downsizing, the couple chose a home with plenty of potential to provide space for their now grown children and the couple's numerous endeavors. Report to the Office One of two offices in the home. This upstairs hideaway serves the homeowner’s business needs and also boasts a relaxing seating area. Inspiration requires reflection. We created a seating area to contemplate the biggest ideas and hone in on the small details. Anything is possible. When it came to creating additional office space on the second floor, we leaned in to that mantra. Consulting with our creative partners, Krieger Architects and builder, E. B. Mahoney, we extended the 2nd floor into what was originally part of the two-story entry, creating office space out of thin air, literally. Contemporary, airy and balanced are the buzz words for the new powder room. Guests are dazzled by the modern oasis bathroom. The rift cut oak vanity we designed grounds the room in an organic, warm feel. The fixtures, lighting and tile tell a decidedly contemporary story. Primary... --- As with really good chocolate, sometimes you just have to indulge the craving. For us, that’s flipping through some of our favorite kitchens. We love remembering how they started out, how they transformed into wonderful gathering spaces, quiet breakfast spots, or baker’s delights. How our homeowners share stories of lively evenings with everyone huddled around the island. Not to be enablers, but we thought you would like to come along as we stroll down our kitchen reno memory lane, coffee in one hand, dark chocolate in the other. Bon appetit! The Bold Story You may recognize our award-winning New Hope kitchen in the above photo. It has been a reader and media favorite, and it’s one of our faves, too. It is an example of taking a bolder approach to kitchen creation. From the wood columns and beams to the custom glass mosaic backsplash, this kitchen has personality for days. Modern French country meets energetic family; the chef-inspired range and hood are flanked by a custom glass mosaic backsplash. Texture reigns! Sometimes an otherwise light kitchen benefits from a bold, anchoring color. In this case, we painted the island a rich navy. What really makes the space pop, though, are the layers of texture we incorporated. We added dimensional millwork and corbels to the front of the island. Then we matched that with thickly-woven-back counter chairs with plush seats. The glass in the three pendants signals a lightness while the black metal gives substance and a hint of the Old... --- Bryn Mawr Home Reveal, Part I This is a story of what can happen when a confident family reaches a transition in their lives that points them in a different design direction. We were excited to work with this family as we had previously designed another home for them. In imagining this new-to-them home, their inspiration photos leaned toward modern farmhouse. But there was a desire to explore more contemporary styling while not losing classic, timeless features. Welcome to the warm, inviting, art-filled contemporary stunner in Bryn Mawr. The interior and exterior of the home were completely reworked to improve the layout, update the spaces and create an environment that is equal parts cozy family home and art installation, due in large part to the homeowners’ significant art collection. The results are a home that reflects the clients’ aesthetics and is supremely livable for the couple and their children. Shout outs galore to architect, Jeff Krieger, and builder, E. B. Mahoney, for an amazing partnership throughout the entire re-imagining and remodel. The two-story entry oozes with modern appeal. The glass and wood staircase wows. White walls are the perfect backdrop to showcase some of the original art pieces the homeowners have collected through the years. And everywhere in the house, we chose lighting fixtures that are works of art in their own right. Party of Two Dual dining tables are visually connected by a sprawling Regina Andrew chandelier. Near the center of the home, the dining room boasts twin party-sized... --- Spoiler Alert: We are in love with gorgeous wallpapers. It’s a thing and we’re okay with it. Spoiler Alert, part 2: Expect a wall-oping number of puns in this post. We invite you, Dear Reader, to join us on a jaw-dropping journey through some of our latest luscious applications of new but ever-timeless wallcoverings. Generations ago, wall coverings were all the rage. They signaled opulence, provided eye candy or hid grime. Whatever the purpose, they were stunning. Books were written to their beauty. A few decades back wallpapers made a resurgence sporting everything from mod graphics to European-style murals. What we are most happy to note here is that wallpapers are officially having another, maybe even more intense, moment. Color us delighted. Belle of the Wall Geometric wallpaper adorns the powder room of a recently remodeled home in Penn Valley Today’s homeowners are spoiled for choice when it comes to wallpapers as exampled by the gorgeous geometrically-inspired abstract at the top of our post and the lattice-look offering we wrapped around every wall in the bathroom of a home we recently remodeled in Penn Valley. It is reported that guests linger in these spaces, wowed by textures and patterns. It’s even been suggested that both have shown up as backdrops in a selfie or two. We’re not surprised. These are star-worthy statement coverings. Feature, Accent, and Quietly Elegant: The Wall-Stars The wallcovering acts to pull all the elements of this sitting/music room together. From our Bucks County home renovation. Some... --- The venerated magazine Aspire Design & Home recently asked Glenna and other design business leaders to share some of GSID’s smartest tips and business strategies as part of a program to help other designers build their business muscles, elevate their firms, and learn from some of the best in the biz. Billed as the Aspire Design Tour, additional sponsors Arhaus, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Fox & Roach Realtors, Natuzzi and Ethan Allen brought interested designers from around the region to hear from Glenna and an all-star panel for a day of no-off-limits-topics—a concept the audience took quite literally. By the end of the program, participants were exhausted, exhilarated and empowered with new knowledge and best practices. If You Don’t Know Where You’re Going, All Roads Will Lead You There Glenna regaling the audience with anecdotes and info In a riff on Lewis Carroll’s quote, much of the conversation revolved around finding the best route through the complexity of what may seem like a straightforward business. Glenna, the undisputed champion for working from a strong foundation of proven business processes, likened the design business to a hike in a beautiful woods—it’s all about the pretty, the feeling, the warm and fuzzy until you’re lost in the forest, every tree looks the same and, oops, you didn’t bring the GPS. Offering up tips to keep those designer-hikers from wondering which mushrooms are edible or how to start a signal fire, Glenna and her fellow experts, Gail Davis, Nile Johnson and Patricia DiLullo,... --- Our Insights from The World’s Largest Market Speaker Of The House If you are a follower of this blog, you know that Glenna is asked to represent GSID and, more broadly, professional interior designers, at numerous events and industry-only shows. With nearly 68,000 people in the US designated as interior designers, it is coup for anyone to be elevated to speaker status at the professional level. At the just-completed semi-annual High Point Market, Glenna was on stage for—not one, but two—presentations. We think she’s a design rock star and, it seems, so do lots of other people. When not educating the industry at the High Point Market, Glenna spent countless hours seeing the latest home furnishings, accessories, lighting, rugs, art and antiques. She met with her preferred vendors to ensure she and the GSID team have the most current resources and information for their homeowner-clients. And, she sourced some simply stunning new finds that will make their way into our beloved clients’ homes very soon. Let’s follow along with Glenna as she reveals her top trends and topical talks from High Point. Designers from around the country came to hear Glenna and her panel partners provide hints and tips to reshape designers’ success in sourcing and procuring the perfect products for their projects. Shout outs to John McClain, Jeanne Chung, and Mike Yates who offered great ideas and shared incredible knowledge. Like Glenna, many top designers took unexpected journeys to get to their design career destination. This panel included a... --- A large part of our initial design process is talking to clients about their homes—what’s great and what’s a bit of a bummer—then actively listening to what they say they want, and how they say it. It is remarkable what you can learn from the words people use to describe things. A family home we recently completed in Penn Valley is a great example of that. The homeowners used words illustrating their preferences for classic, clean, elevated, with nods to subtle texture. Mind you, those were not the words they used but, through years of experience really honing in on what clients say, how they say it and their body language, we received their messages loud and clear. Results below! Timeless Is A Fashion Statement When you’re given classic architectural elements and millwork, go with them. An imperative was to give many of the spaces more natural lighting and flow, which we did, but we love leaning in to a home’s beautiful, original personality. With vision and some well-chosen finishes and furnishings what was once formal becomes a timeless family-friendly space. Being Prepared Isn’t Just for Camp Outs Prep space, serving space and abundant seating were non-negotiables. With small children there’s hardly ever enough space to prep and store anything, especially in the kitchen. Moreover, teens and adults love to gather at the island but that’s not an option for tip-over-prone toddlers. So we made sure our homeowners had all the space they need for the accoutrements of a burgeoning... --- We Talk: Surfaces, Style, Sustainability For Glenna and the GSID team, mastery of the products and finishes they select for your homes is paramount. Their deep research, knowledge and understanding of the subtle distinctions in construction, applications, technology and sustainability mean they can specify what’s best for your home and for your personal preferences and values. It’s a difference that makes a difference. To C what’s Next At the forefront of what is known in our industry as surfaces, Glenna participated in a small master group summit, C. Next, presented by a number of leading luxury brands including Cosentino and Hearst Publications. C. Next is the premier platform where experts discuss all aspects of design plus new developments in surface products used for everything from countertops to commercial building exteriors. If immersion was the intent, the goal was met, according to Glenna. “Taking the pulse of the industry and going deep with experts on all manner of design, product and environmental topics is imperative to being the best design firm. Engaging with experts, continually adding to our knowledge builds trust with our clients,” Glenna noted. What she did not say, but we will, is that GSID’s reputation in the design world is what brought them the opportunity to be included in this elite-level education. Home Is Not Just Where You Are, It’s What You Are Panel of experts and guiding lights in the emotion of design Focusing on sustainability was, as expected, a hot topic and integral to the entire... --- We've already shared the first floor, and now it's time for our Bucks County second floor reveal. While the first floor’s design focuses on gathering and entertaining, the second floor is more of a sanctum for this blended family. Here, we took our lead from what each member wanted from their personal spaces and tailored the rooms to fit them perfectly. Our Bucks County Second Floor Reveal As you take the stairs to the second floor, you notice a striking chandelier that feels like a work of art. A contemporary console table anchors the upper landing. With a few key design details, we made a statement in this transitional space. Artistic lighting throughout the home adds a unique element In the primary bedroom, soft tones create a sense of serene sophistication. Quietly luxurious touches in the textured wallpaper, custom bed, and elegant bench elevate this space. Overall, it's a calm and restful space for winding down after a busy day. A soothing palette and layers of texture offer a sense of sanctuary The adjacent sitting room is equally tranquil, with a watercolor-inspired wallpaper mural that wraps around the space. Cozy seating and an upholstered ottoman add softness. We envisioned this as a space for relaxing and enjoying hobbies, like reading and playing guitar. The sitting room is a quiet spot for relaxing away from the busy household We designed the children's bedrooms with consideration for their likes and tastes. It was important to our clients that their kids should have... --- Whether it is the star of the show or its role is to bring the whole room into harmonious balance, rugs are a part of nearly every room, every space in our homes. But their construction, color, size and placement are big question marks for most of us. Fortunately, GSID is full of rug knowledge and we’re here to share that with you. We tapped our senior designer, Michelle Leff, and our friend, Dody Belden, of Loloi Rugs, to give us the download where our feet meet the floor. The Size Is Right “For the majority of our projects, we establish the furniture placement first, then size the rug to go with it,” notes Michelle. Starting with the furniture layout allows you to see what size will fit comfortably under the furnishings while leaving enough open floor space for a clear path of circulation. No one wants to feel like they are walking around the furniture with one foot on the rug and the other on the floor. It’s uncomfortable and can create a tripping hazard. Michelle’s experience is that people tend to select rugs smaller than what is called for which can make a space look sparse or skimpy. So what’s the right size? This depends on the room but here are few rules of thumb: For smaller living spaces, opt for a rug that extends about 12 inches from the wall In larger living spaces, you can leave more area around the border of the rug, just be... --- We're incredibly excited to share our Bucks County first floor reveal! This project encompassed the whole home for a blended family, with the goal of making it truly reflective of who they are. By creating statement spaces as well as livable, family-friendly areas, we designed a beautiful, welcoming, and happy home for all to enjoy. Come take a tour with us, and stay tuned for the second floor! Our Bucks County First Floor Reveal With three children and a dog, life for our clients is certainly busy. They love to travel and entertain, and are wine connoisseurs. While they wanted unique and sculptural elements, we needed to balance that with family-friendly design. We also struck a happy medium between the modern farmhouse style of the home with their personal aesthetic, which leans more modern and contemporary. Friends who enter the front door are greeted by the spacious foyer, with a blend of visual texture in lighting, furniture, and art. It feels elevated but welcoming. They will likely be met by the family dog, either bounding down the stairs or tapping her way in from the kitchen. The bright, airy foyer makes a statement with texture and color The formal dining room off of the entry features a statement chandelier, enhanced by a pair of sconces flanking the sideboard and a textured wallcovering. This is a space designed for dinner parties and wine tastings. A sculptural chandelier and textured wallcovering add sophistication to the space The living room, on the opposite... --- Like the perfect cashmere sweater or a tool that rests so comfortably in your hand, there are design details, textures, colors and elements that work wonderfully well again and again. These become the personal perennial favorites for professional designers, ending up in clients’ homes and, sometimes, in their own personal spaces. In lightning-round fashion, we pitched quick queries to Glenna to garner her unvarnished opinions and all-time faves. Read on to learn the insider bests and a few “no-ways” from Glenna’s decades of experience. Organic Geometry What might sound like a cross between chemistry and math is actually a beautiful representation of the perfect imperfections found in nature. On fabrics, rugs, wallcoverings, or even the veining of natural stone tops, the imperfect but repeating patterns mimic what the eye sees and the brain composes from the organic world. Subtle or bold, these elements subconsciously induce both interest and calm in our psyche. Even in a statement-making hue, organic geometrics infuse softness. Even Tilly, Glenna’s pup, seems to love the natural imperfections of this rug with a floral motif in an organic geometric. Staying On Track Favorite sofa style got a speedy and pretty definitive response: track arm style with exposed feet or legs. So what does that translate to? A flatter profile on the arm (as opposed to rolled or round arms) and no skirt or pleats covering the bottom of the sofa. Beyond that, there’s a plethora of silhouettes to choose from. One example is below. The accent chair... --- This is the time of year when “cozy” gets tossed about like an old sweater. At GSI, cozy is about far more than fuzzy socks and steaming mugs of Russian tea. We lean into the luxury of hygge, a philosophy of design that loosely translates as creating an inviting atmosphere where you enjoy the good things in life with good people. That’s our kind of cozy. So, dear reader, we invite you into some of our homes to see how different styles, seasons, and perspectives set the stage for enjoying special spaces with folks you cherish. Happy hygge. A Monopoly on Happiness As soon as you walk through the door, there’s a sense of jovial hospitality beckoning you to stay awhile. If comfortable, relaxed and welcoming equate to well-being—and we think it does—then this living room at the New Hope Farmhouse is an oasis of good vibes. The homeowners relish casual get-togethers with friends and loved ones, catching up on the day, breaking out the board games or noshing on homemade treats. We helped them bring their cozy-space dreams to fruition with loads of layers, tons of texture and a kick-your-feet-up sensibility. Solace in the Silence The good life is sometimes best enjoyed as a solo pursuit. Close the door, light the fireplace, sink into a snuggly side chair and just... breathe. Once you’ve cleared the hum of the day’s responsibilities from your headspace, it’s time to luxuriate in quietude and peace. That’s what the owners of this hygge-centric bedroom... --- In December, we showed you the first floor of the Gladwyne home with its showstopping public rooms and relaxed family gathering spots. To kick off 2024, come upstairs to see the sublime and sweet private spaces we created for this vibrant family. Sanctuary of Delights Everything about the primary bedroom speaks to quiet luxury. It was designed as a retreat for the body, mind and soul. The elevated primary suite is a study in luxurious tranquility. From the color palette to the curvaceous and oh-so-tactile furnishings, to the bedroom fireplace, every inch beckons you to relax, calm your mind, and finally (*sigh*) enjoy the moment. Our design decisions were driven by the concepts of peace and ease as the homeowners have three active youngsters and incredibly busy schedules. They need a respite where comfort and connection are paramount. Can We Stop for a Cappuccino? Talk about a treat! From your morning cuppa to an evening herbal wind-down, the beverage bar serves it all. And the amount of additional storage that it has tucked between the bedroom and bath, well, that’s just another pick-me-up. Ditch the drive-thru, keep the car in the garage. Our homeowners need only to walk a few feet to the best coffee house in the neighborhood. Situated between the bedroom and main bath, we nestled a custom beverage bar complete with its own small sink and espresso station with a bounty of extra storage. The bold, jewel-toned metallic wallcovering separates this space from the understated tones of... --- ---
