Mudroom essentials

Some interior projects are driven by function first; this is definitely the case when we design or redesign a mudroom.  For many of us, fall and winter are just around the corner and will bring rain, mud, and even snow.  Creating a mudroom keeps messy weather from making its way into the rest of your home. Don’t have a lot of room?  Don’t worry.  These mudroom essentials work in almost any footprint!

When it comes to designing these utilitarian spaces, our design team works with each client to identify their specific needs.  They discuss everything from custom cabinetry and storage solutions to lighting and finishes that suit the clients’ lifestyle and aesthetic perfectly, so that their homes work for them (and not the other way around).

Mudroom essentials: what you need to know

Floors

Tile is ideal for a mudroom because it’s low maintenance and holds up to our clients’ daily routines.  Function and style can (and should) coexist in these hardworking spaces!  In our Wyndmoor mudroom, we arranged slate-gray tiles in a chic herringbone pattern for a custom feel.  Bonus tip: Keep an indoor/outdoor runner or washable throw rug in a drawer for inclement weather to prevent tracking in mud and water.

Seating

Another must for us is a bench seat; this is where you and the family take off those wet or dirty shoes and boots.  We like to incorporate cubbies below so that footwear can be tucked underneath – and no one is scrambling the next morning looking for their shoes!  Our clients also find it helpful to have a place to set down groceries, backpacks, sports equipment, and work bags when you come home with your hands full.  We can design your seating to fit exactly what you need.

Storage and accessories

Efficient storage is a must in a mudroom, especially if you’re working with a small area.  Built-in cabinets are a great multifunction solution since they can be tailored to your lifestyle.  Hooks for coats and bags are a given, whether you opt for exposed hooks or concealed cabinetry.  Shelves and drawers are perfect for smaller items like towels and umbrellas.  If everything has a dedicated spot, you’ll find it much easier to get out the door in the morning.
