Our five favorite podcasts to listen to right now

Like almost everyone, we love podcasts.  They’re the perfect companions for working from home, going for an early morning run, or taking a long drive.  There’s something for everyone, including a wealth of design, business, and creative entrepreneur-centered programs.   Today, we’re sharing our team’s favorite podcasts and would love to hear yours!

Glenna

I love hearing other people’s perspectives and insights on design, business, and how they intersect, so it was really hard for me to choose a favorite!  Business of Home is one that I never miss.  The topics dig deep into the business of interior design in a balanced, nuanced way.  Some episodes feature powerhouse designers, while others focus on things like social media, branding, retail, and publishing.   There are even interviews with makers and craftspeople, which get down to design at its most fundamental level.  I can learn something from every one.

Since I really couldn’t choose one, I also highly recommend Profit is a Choice.  I had the pleasure of being interviewed recently by host Michele Williams.  Michele focuses on the day to day decisions that form a foundation for a successful business, and it’s so informative to listen to the life lessons learned by her guests.  The candid discussions offer insight and a sense of camaraderie as I celebrate ten years of business ownership.

Andrea

Having a talent for design is one thing, and essential to being a successful interior designer.  However, the business aspect isn’t something you’re taught in design school.  I love listening to A Well Designed Business because it talks about pain points in the design industry that we all face, and discusses growing pains in a simple and relatable way.  LuAnn sheds a light on this side of the design industry, which isn’t glamorous but very necessary.  She also cultivates a sense of community by discussing the trials and tribulations of owning a design business.  For me, the most meaningful thing is that she digs deep and talks about things that make you say “Yes!  I’ve been trying to figure out a solution to this!”

Kate

The coolest thing about the Monocle on Design podcast is that it encompasses the range of what we think of as design – furniture, architecture, graphic design, fashion, and even crafts.  Most of the episodes are about half an hour and feature interviews with design pros from all over the world, so you get these little snapshots of what’s going on at the moment in the world on a global level and see how they intersect.  A recent episode talked about the relationship between architecture and health.  It’s very timely and gave me a lot to think about.

I’m a lifelong Philadelphian and strong supporter of small business, so it’s not surprising that my choice is a local podcast!  Gabrielle Mandel is the artist behind Supra Endura, and is the one-woman creator, producer, and host of Creative Conversations.  In each episode, Gabrielle chats with her guests – creative entrepreneurs from all fields, from design to retail to theater – about what led them to this point.  The conversations have an easy, open, and honest flow that I really appreciate.  There’s no artifice or rehearsed speeches; everything feels natural.  As someone who has taken a circuitous path to arrive in a career that I love, I’m fascinated by the individual journeys of the guests.

Olivia

I really enjoy 99% Invisible. The host, Roman Mars, examines to the origins of everyday things, their history, and the evolution to how we perceive them today.  You learn so much about things from mannequins to drinking straws – things you might not ever think twice about because they’re just there.  Mars takes this down to a fundamental level: “That is a big part of design – the thing you don’t think about or notice, probably had the most thought put into it.”  Each episode is more like an interesting story than an interview, which is a format I gravitate towards.  I find myself looking at everyday spaces and things in a completely different way now!
