Our love of design

Valentine’s Day might make you think of chocolates and flowers, but we’re doing something a little different this year.  Our team is so fortunate to work with wonderful clients on fabulous projects.  We wanted to share our love of design through some projects, both past and present, and why they hold a special place in our hearts!

It’s so hard to choose, but I have a real fondness for the William Heritage Winery tasting room in Haddonfield.  When the Heritages decided to open a second location and asked us to design it, it meant so much to us.  There’s a trust and a bond that comes with developing a relationship with longtime clients, and we don’t take that for granted.  On a personal level, they’re a great family with a passion for what they do and we really enjoy the friendship that’s grown out of working with them over the past few years.  In the Mullica Hill location, we helped them tell the Heritage family story through design.  The Haddonfield space represents a new chapter in their history, and the design has a boutique feel that is friendly and warm with lots of texture and natural elements.  We wanted it to fit perfectly with the Main Street vibe of the location, and it really does!  I love the idea of people strolling down the brick sidewalk, seeing the interior through the big front window, and feeling the pull to come inside and see more.

Our New Hope project offered me the opportunity for a new kind of project with its focus on space planning.  I had to work around the existing beamwork to open up the kitchen to the adjacent great room, and also create access to the pantry from the kitchen.  Specifically, the beams in the kitchen needed to be reworked to work with the new metal hood design; creating symmetry was our goal.  Redesigning the area made the space more functional, and while I worked in AutoCAD, I also did quite a bit of hand sketching during the design process.  This is a really tactile way of connecting the space in your mind to what you’re putting on paper, and it helped me problem solve a little differently.  Speaking of problem solving, the communication and teamwork with the builder on this project was so smooth and everyone was invested in making it a success for the design team and for the clients.  The result is beyond beautiful, our clients are amazing, and I’ll always value the fact that it made me an even better designer.

The new kitchen design makes me so happy every time I see it.  It really is a dream come true to know that it came together just as I imagined and our clients love it.  I hope they have many years of happy memories here.

I’m in the install phase of a pretty unique project right now!  It’s a whole home design that focuses a lot on the clients’ love of entertaining.  I had to strike a balance between their more traditional style and their desire for an updated feeling, which we did with fun wallpapers, colorful layers, and bold patterns.  I incorporated patterns that I wouldn’t normally use, but that really suited both the client and the home.  I definitely enjoyed flexing a different design muscle there.  Coming up with creative ways to use the space for entertaining and hosting was a key design objective, and we did it with combinations of seating and occasional tables that can be shifted around.  Of course, teamwork is huge and I’m lucky to have a great contractor on the project who is really open with communication and jumps in to lend a hand.

One really cool thing about this home is a deck that you can access from the bedroom and living room.  We made some updates to the existing deck, and I’m so glad.  These two spaces have a perfect view of it and the beautiful woods beyond!  I can’t wait for the final result – the photos are going to be amazing.

Our Fairmount townhome was one of my first projects I took on as a designer with GSID.  The clients were so warm and the house has a ton of charm, like many of the homes in the neighborhood.  They have a classic style with a fun, modern twist and it was an intriguing challenge to blend that with the historic features like the marble fireplace and soaring ceilings in the living room.  The dining room is bright and welcoming, and the powder room is whimsical with its butterfly wallpaper.  With that being said, the living room is definitely the star of the house.  Their beloved heirloom baby grand piano sits in front of the windows, with a geometric shagreen console table and hexagon velvet stools that tuck underneath.  I love this corner of the living room so much, because it’s full of texture and light and just feels happy.  We collaborated with them to create a timeless space that reflects the history of the house with a bit of glam, but still has personal touches in each nook and cranny. I hope they love their space as much as I loved working on their project with them!

I just started a new commercial project, which lets me see through a different lens than residential projects.  It’s fun to combine the inviting, beautiful aspects of design with the specific needs of the client.  So much of commercial design is tied to a company’s brand and message, and this client asked us to marry pieces of their history with their vision for the future.  I’m excited that they want to incorporate a few vintage pieces!  We plan to transform a pair of antique card catalogs into side tables, and will give a beautiful vintage map cabinet a new home.  I love that these unique, meaningful pieces will add character to the space.  Even when the project is completed, I’ll always remember how I was able to take a bit of history and layer it into a one-of-a-kind design.  It’s going to be fantastic!
