Container gardening for indoors and out

Container gardening with planters is one of the simplest and most versatile design elements that you can add to your home.  Whether indoors or out (or both!), they can enhance the feeling of a space.  Various sizes create interest, and you can add color and height by using both the vessels and their contents.  Another great feature is their portability – in most cases, you can swap them indoors and out depending on the weather or your mood.  Here are some ways we love to use planters when we design spaces!

Mixed material

One of our favorite things about planters is that they come in a wide variety of materials.  From stone and ceramic to wood and metal, you can play with textures for visual interest.  Plastic and resin vessels have the added bonus of being lightweight (and therefore easily portable).  Styles ranging from traditional to eclectic offer container gardening options for any home!

Adding planters that flank your front door is a quick and easy way to polish your entry and boost curb appeal.  Shrubs, perennials, trees, or a combination of any of these create a welcoming atmosphere.  No porch?  No problem.  Potted evergreens look great on either side of the front steps of a townhome and last through all four seasons.

Add a softer touch

Plants are an excellent decorative accent for hard corners in your home.  Palms and ferns, like this fiddle leaf in a sleek pot, are ideal for creating a soft flow in angular or awkward spaces.   Greenery gives life to a room; by container gardening strategically, you can create a relaxed atmosphere in even the most boxy and stark areas.

Empty corners?  We got ya!

On the other hand, if you have a large or awkward, bare corner or two in your home, a planter helps to anchor the room.  One benefit of a tall or raised planter like this one from Palecek is that it doesn’t have to take up much space.  This helps to keep things from seeming crowded.  I also love the slim lines of this one, which helps to make it an accent instead of a feature!

Size it up

Whether indoors or out, grouping containers is always a surefire way to create style.  Two easy rules of thumb to follow are to use odd numbers and vary sizes and heights to prevent a look that’s too matchy or boring.  To keep things cohesive, choose containers in similar materials, color palettes, or shapes.
