Statement Mirrors

Statement mirrors are one of the easiest ways to change the mood of a room.  The right mirror in the right place can add visual interest and style, while bouncing light and making a space feel larger and more inviting.  How can you use them in your own home or office?  We’ve got some ideas about that!

How to choose the right statement mirror

When choosing a mirror, the finish and frame can pick up subtle elements from other furnishings or accents.  For our client’s traditional music room, we opted for a cool, geometric mirror in brass to add a twist, draw the eye, and tie into the brass table lamps.   Do you like soft, fluid curves?  Round mirrors suit that style perfectly.  Square or rectangular mirrors work well in both traditional and contemporary spaces, depending on the frame.

If your style is out of the box and you like to mix it up with color, explore different materials and shapes.  This green beaded starburst mirror from Palecek has a definite wow factor!

For a client’s traditional living room, we chose a round wooden mirror.  The scalloped design adds texture and interest, while tying into the tones and wood details of the room.  Cohesion is key!

Where to place statement mirrors for the best effect

Depending on their placement, statement mirrors can add a wow factor to different areas in your home.  Placing a mirror across from windows allows light to reflect and brightens the room.  It’s the perfect solution for small or dark spaces, like powder rooms and hallways.  The Calais mirror from Currey & Co. features an open, airy design with recycled glass balls that refract light.

Mirrors, particularly statement mirrors, are great for entries and over mantles.  They’re a fabulous combination of function and style, can double as artwork, and add a focal point to the space.  John-Richard’s watercolor-inspired canvas wall mirror bordered by a gold frame adds just the right touch of contrast.  As a bonus, a cool mirror just inside the door is perfect for a last minute wardrobe check before leaving the house!
