Willows Park family room

While we’ve already shown off the kitchen, now we’re turning the spotlight on our Willows Park family room!  Originally, these rooms were adjacent and separated by a loadbearing wall.  To implement our open concept design, we worked with our partners at EB Mahoney Builders to remove the wall and create a better flow and lighter, brighter overall feeling.  In order to establish cohesion between the two rooms, we added custom updates to the family room along with new pieces for an elevated and welcoming space.

Creating cohesion between our Willows Park family room and kitchen

Removing the wall between the kitchen and family room to create an open concept space meant that we needed to create cohesion.  That doesn’t mean making everything match, but the feeling of the rooms have to balance, or else it can be jarring.  With the new kitchen’s airy brightness, we wanted to give the family room a fresh, updated design.

We made several changes, some bigger than others, but the result is a beautiful space that we’d love to hang out in!  The first order of business was selecting new seating.  We replaced the existing leather chairs and sofa with a pair of fun swivel chairs (check out that pattern!) and a comfy, neutral sofa.  A chic side table and new area rug gave the room a whole new look.  We also redesigned the furniture plan to feel spacious and open.

One of our favorite details involved the fireplace.  A local barn in Villanova had fallen into disrepair due to neglect, and was subsequently demolished.  We helped our clients select a reclaimed beam from the structure to use as the mantle.  Now, it’s a lovely piece of local history and a fabulous focal point!

Next, the clients’ existing built ins were adequate but cluttered, and the dark wood backs created a shadowy effect.  We reconfigured the shelving and mounted the television in the center for an integrated look.  Slate blue paint and brass hardware add a modern touch.

Finally, we removed the dated window treatments to allow light to flood the room, and replaced the existing ceiling fan with a more modern style that fits beautifully with the different wood tones in the space.  Has this family room inspired you to make some changes to your own?  Get in touch with us and let’s talk about it!
