2020 Chair Affair for Pathways to Housing
It’s May, which means that it’s time for the 2020 Chair Affair to benefit Pathways to Housing! This year marks our third Chair Affair, and we love having the opportunity to flex our creative muscles for a great cause yet again. Pathways does such important work in Philadelphia for people transitioning from homelessness, especially with its furniture bank. We share the Philadelphia Furniture Bank‘s belief that “home is more than four walls,” and it’s an honor to support their mission. This year’s Chair Affair will be held virtually in light of COVID restrictions, so get comfy and bid from home!
Looking back
We’ve submitted pieces in 2017 and 2018, with a break last year as we were settling into our own new GSID home. For the Chair Affair, artists and designers select a piece that’s been donated to the Furniture Bank and transform it. The redesigns go up for auction at the gala, and winners take home one of a kind chairs, furniture, and artwork! We’re so excited to join in again and share a peek at what we have in store, but first, let’s look back at our previous submissions.
In 2017, we restored a beautiful wood stool before adding a newly upholstered seat featuring an embroidered bonsai tree motif in deep pink. Titled Branching Out, this beauty had the highest bid of all of the chairs at the inaugural Chair Affair!
2018 saw us moving in a different direction, led by our designer Andrea. We selected an elegant bench that had been donated by the Rittenhouse Hotel, a beloved establishment on Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square. After small repairs to the mahogany frame, we added a new cushion upholstered in a cream boucle with contrasting trim and buttons in tones of gray. On the Horizon was a chic addition to the 2nd annual gala and went home with happy new owners.
2020 Chair Affair preview
In 2020, junior designer Kate has taken point with another unique design! We selected a beautiful 1960s side chair in need of a little love and the GSID special touch. We really love the carved circular motif in the chair’s back, along with the subtly curved arms.
Drawing on the curves and lines, the team chose a pattern and brainstormed a color palette for the chair.
You can find all of the details about the virtual auction on the Pathways to Housing website, and preview several of the auction items ahead of time. We hope you’ll join us!
