Design Details: Lighting
One of the most impactful elements in good design is lighting. As design professionals we must understand lighting from every perspective—from basic to intricate functionality; how lighting alters or enhances color and shape; whether it should create a visually larger or more intimately-sized space; how it affects mood and psychology; and what may need to happen as we age or deal with vision changes. And maybe most importantly, does it look amazing in the space.
We take a layered approach to lighting
Depending on the room, how it functions, and what the owners’ needs are, we may use several kinds of light such as general task lighting, specialty lighting (think: gallery lighting), table or floor lamps, sconces, chandeliers and ceiling lights.
Specific rooms also need specific lighting. Take the kitchen, for example. The needs there are totally different than what you use in a bathroom or even an entryway.
Not all lighting should be in the spotlight
We think statement light fixtures are fantastic and we love to use them when the design calls for it. Often though, the perfect light shines because of its understated qualities.
Smile when you say that
Yes, lighting is functional and practical, but it is also a design feature that loves to have fun. It brings personality and character to a space and sometimes, a smile to your face.
Lighting pro tip #1: we believe in going big. When in doubt, choose larger.
Light the bright
Even areas with an abundance of natural light need good lighting. This entryway is a great example. We used both flush-mounts and sconces to give this space the perfect glow from dusk onward.
Lighting pro tip #2: dimmers are your friend. You can use them with almost every type of lighting now. They make a huge difference.
When you have lighting design questions, we have the answers. Let us help you create a beautiful home filled with a warm glow.
