Cozy, Comfy, Cheerful, Cherished: How GSID Does Hygge
This is the time of year when “cozy” gets tossed about like an old sweater. At GSID, cozy is about far more than fuzzy socks and steaming mugs of Russian tea. We lean into the luxury of hygge, a philosophy of design that loosely translates as creating an inviting atmosphere where you enjoy the good things in life with good people. That’s our kind of cozy.
So, dear reader, we invite you into some of our homes to see how different styles, seasons, and perspectives set the stage for enjoying special spaces with folks you cherish. Happy hygge.
A Monopoly on Happiness
If comfortable, relaxed and welcoming equate to well-being—and we think it does—then this living room at the New Hope Farmhouse is an oasis of good vibes. The homeowners relish casual get-togethers with friends and loved ones, catching up on the day, breaking out the board games or noshing on homemade treats. We helped them bring their cozy-space dreams to fruition with loads of layers, tons of texture and a kick-your-feet-up sensibility.
Solace in the Silence
Close the door, light the fireplace, sink into a snuggly side chair and just…breathe. Once you’ve cleared the hum of the day’s responsibilities from your headspace, it’s time to luxuriate in quietude and peace. That’s what the owners of this hygge-centric bedroom asked for—tranquility, respite, an outer expression of inner sanctuary. We say, in a whisper, yes, it’s exactly this.
Facing East
Here’s another home that, from the moment you walk in, you’re enchanted by what you see and how it makes you feel. Our homeowners’ collection of stunning Far East treasures stands centerstage in their Washington Square home. Our job was to bring cohesion to the collection, allow each piece to suggest a storyline, and make modern marry with their antiquities. The result is a space that tells of a life richly tapestried, lived by interesting and open-hearted individuals waiting to share their tales with you.
The Perfect Playlist, With a Contemporary Beat
Lest you think we completely abandoned hygge’s Nordic nod to warm hearth = warm home, we are sharing a timeless design from our Old City home. Bright, light and linear meets darker wood tones and columns with a bit of heft, creating a mixtape of modern harmony. The open shelving assures lightness while providing calming balance. And yes, we made sure there was a supple sectional sofa that is like a siren’s song for lounging. Fuzzy socks and Russian tea are optional.
We hope you find joy and cheeriness in your home and embrace your hygge.
