Lafayette Hill Kitchen Redesign
Our previous clients asked us to redesign their Lafayette Hill kitchen, and we were thrilled to work with them again. As their family transitions into a new phase of their lives, they wanted a “family center” as well as a space that doubles as a spot for working from home. We loved designing this airy, welcoming kitchen!
Lafayette Hill kitchen – Before
The existing kitchen had a dated and shadowy feel without much natural light. The tiled floor and granite countertop contributed to the dated feeling, while their table and chairs didn’t feel part of the kitchen.
In addition to wanting a lighter, brighter vibe, the clients were also hoping for a larger island. Finally, they asked for more storage, which really allowed us to get creative with our friends at Village Handcrafted Cabinetry.
Lafayette Hill kitchen – Inspiration
In order to function as both a workspace and the family hub, the kitchen needed to be comfortable and livable. At the same time, the clients wanted a space reflective of the rest of their home’s effortless sophistication. We started with a neutral palette to brighten the space, and layered in textured elements for interest. Pops of blue add depth, and new paint makes the room feel larger and lighter.
Lafayette Hill kitchen – After
By adding banquette seating along with custom built in cabinetry where the previous table and chairs had been, we accomplished several goals at once. First, we anchored the space at either end of the kitchen and added a sense of balance that had been lacking. We also created more storage in what was previously wasted space. By repainting the existing kitchen cabinets with a factory finish that matched with the new cabinetry in the banquette space, we were able to bring visual cohesion to the two spaces. Finally, the inviting, L-shaped banquette is perfect for both work and family time.
We replaced the dark granite countertops with creamy quartz and added a larger slab in the island to make seating more comfortable. New island stools upholstered with Revolution performance fabric are perfect for a busy family who enjoys spending time together eating and entertaining friends. (The banquette is also Revolution performance fabric!) The antique white subway tile backsplash softly reflects natural light from the windows at either end of the space – we removed the shutters on the window above the banquette to allow for a splash of color – and new hardwood floors match the existing flooring in the home. Lastly, small touches like new cabinet pulls and larger, brighter light fixtures elevate the entire design.
Because we love getting our clients’ perspective on the GSID design process, we asked if they would be kind enough to answer a couple of questions for us.
GSID: What is your favorite thing about your new kitchen?
Client: Everything! We started the project because I really wanted to change out the countertops – which of course led to an entire redo. The banquette is the real showstopper! Myself and everyone else loves it, wants to sit on it, lay on it, admire it! It’s perfection. What also really tugs at my heart is the walnut shelving and countertop detail in the built in, the huge gorgeous ceiling light over our new round table, the cabinet paint color, and of course the countertops!
GSID: What did you enjoy the most about our design process and working with us?
Client: I love working with Glenna and her team. This is our second project with you (and I have a few more planned in my head). Working with you takes out all of the “noise” that a project like this can make. You’re easily accessible, honest and approachable and just seem to be able to understand my vision for a space (even when I really don’t because I am not good at this stuff) and make it a reality. I especially love that you know what I will like and will work much more than I do – for example, the ceiling light and the mirror in our kitchen. Never, ever would I have been able to select those pieces on my own. I would have gone my normal safe Pinterest route, which would be okay but not special. You turned the space into “wow”!
As you can tell, this was an amazing project and we loved designing it for such a wonderful family!
