Main Line family room and breakfast room

When we design homes, we do so with two key goals in mind: beauty and livability.  At the end of the day, home is where you live, and we don’t just mean that it’s your address.  You should be able to relax, eat, laugh, play, and enjoy the day-to-day moments, big and small.  In our Main Line family room and breakfast room, we blended comfort and sophistication to create stylish spaces perfect for a busy family.

Our clients wanted to tackle the open floor plan and define separate “zones” for the family and breakfast rooms.  As two busy professionals with young children, they wanted to turn the project (and any stress) over to a designer who “got” their style. It was important to them that we select family-friendly furnishings with an elevated aesthetic, and that the family room and breakfast room be distinct but cohesive.  We appreciate their trust in our design process and our vision, and were so happy to help!

Family room

We “framed” the family room with a furniture plan featuring tailored sofas, tables with geometric lines, and versatile accent seating.  The overall neutral palette was punched up with colorful, patterned throw pillows, an oversized plant stand with trailing greenery, and warm metals.  To take it up another notch, we added custom millwork to the wall opposite the windows overlooking the backyard.  We highlighted it with the statement mirror from last week’s blog post.

With the television mounted over the fireplace, almost every seat in the family room has an excellent view.  We did take the opportunity to create a chic reading corner, however.  This unique chair (a GSID fave!) and ottoman are flanked by a cool floor lamp and sculpted side table.  We think that this spot gets the best natural light, particularly with the custom shutters that we added.

Breakfast room

With the family room plan established, we designed the breakfast room in the open area between the family room and the kitchen.  The key to this was to define it as its own dedicated space.  We approached it in a way that could be described as vertically – the contemporary chandelier above and the neutral area rug below anchor it top to bottom.  Six clean-lined dining chairs are no muss, no fuss and fit comfortably around the round pedestal table.  Warm wood tones in the table and chairs lend a cozy air and cohesion with the family room.  Overall, the design is a casually classic space that they can enjoy as a family for years to come.

With thoughtful planning, attention to detail, and an eye for unique touches we successfully turned a somewhat overwhelming, very open room into two comfortable, welcoming, and livable spaces that will fit this family for many happy years!

The Haddonfield tasting room is exquisite! I grew up in Haddonfield, have been a Wisconsinite for 52 years and my husband and I are soon retiring to a condominium in Haverford PA. We are so fortunate that Glenna Stone is the designer for our new space.
