Growing Into It: Children’s Rooms Mean Organization, Independence, Adaptability
Bringing delight to a child’s room is ultimately about understanding their personalities, characters and interests. But more than that, kid’s rooms are workhorses when it comes to organization, comfort, and helping support the physical, emotional and psychological needs of the child regardless of age. While children’s spaces may look all light and whimsy, there’s real research and thought put into it all.
Take our magic carpet ride through some spaces for tots, teens and adult-adjacents.
Early Years
Everyone oohs and aahs at this adorable safari-inspired room. It is a reflection of the adventurous spirit of the family’s little one. As the creator of this space we did much more than resource the most adorable stuffed giraffe ever, we added extra padding under the super soft carpet where little feet tread and where, sometimes, falls can happen. We filled the room with storage that can be repositioned and re-used as the child ages up. We added soft seating where our tiny client can snuggle with a parent for story time or enjoy browsing through a book on her own. Walls, windows coverings and flooring were kept intentionally neutral for an easy transition when she’s ready for a more adolescent space.
At Home in the Clouds
Throughout this kid’s space—around the bed, the play area and the special nook under the eaves—we opted for the birds and clouds wallcovering of our dreams. Storage is again at the forefront as we all know that kids have the most “stuff.” The cloud cover is age-right for now and will be great as this child grows up.
Age Has Its Privileges
Teens and young adult rooms are not where leftovers and mismatched pieces go to die, at least not in these comfy and sophisticated spaces. Without forethought, rooms for this age can turn into a tidal wave of books, paperwork, clothing and knick knacks. We take a-place-for-everything-and-everything-in-its-place philosophy. That means abundant room for study and all the associated items that requires; bedside storage, good-looking organizational pieces and a light and relaxing atmosphere.
