Meet the designer: Vivian Mulder
Next in our “meet the designer” series, we’re featuring our design director, Vivian! Learn about what inspired her to pursue a career in interior design, what she loves most about her job, and why she’s so happy to be part of the GSID team. Keep reading to meet the designer: Vivian!
Why did you choose a career in interior design?
As far back as I can remember, I’ve always taken note of how my surroundings have had the ability to impact my mood and happiness. I truly believe good design can impact people’s lives for the better. I’m equally right-and left- brained, and design is the perfect combination of logical and creative.

What would you say that you love most about being an interior designer?
Solving problems (circulation, poor function, too little space, addressing a specific functional need) with solutions that work and are also beautiful. Also, no two work days are ever the same. I love that one day I can be working on something extremely technical, like detailed millwork, and the next I am picking fabrics and furniture. As Design Director, I get a birds-eye view of the entire process and have the opportunity to use my years of experience to make sure it all goes smoothly.
If you had to pick a favorite space to design, what would it be and why?
I love living rooms, because there are infinite configurations depending on how people live and want to feel in the space. Color palettes can be rich and layered or minimal and clean, and each design is completely unique to the individual. Artwork usually gets incorporated which really tells a story of the people who use the space.

How has your career carried over into other aspects of your life?
My career is my life, my life is my career. They’re so interwoven and it works for me!
Why do you enjoy being a part of the GSID team?
I love how we all collaborate and are always willing to help each other. We have such a strong team ethic and different people bring different strengths and insights, which I think enables all of us to constantly learn and grow. Most importantly, everyone is focused on making sure the clients’ needs are addressed, and everyone’s individual talents contribute to amazing projects.
