4 Tips for Selecting Artwork

Selecting artwork can be a very personal thing, and selecting the right work for the right space depends on several factors.  One of our specialty services as an interior design firm involves helping our clients to choose artwork for their homes, and we have four great tips we use in our process with clients!

Know what you like

This is the most important aspect when it comes to selecting artwork for your home or office.  Regardless of the cost, it should always be something that brings you joy.  It’s worth it to take your time when looking at different styles and subjects.  When evaluating a piece of art, you should ask yourself, “Will I still love this in 5, 10, 20 years?”  If you have conflicting styles in your household, your interior designer will help you navigate ways to include everyone’s preferences in your space.

Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone

It can be liberating to widen your scope.  Search out exhibits in your area if you’re looking to explore new (or new to you) artists.  Local galleries develop collections with thoughtful consideration by curators who are happy to discuss different works with you.  Consider drawing inspiration from the design, feel, and color scheme of a space.  Soothing blues and greens in a bedroom or vibrant primary colors in the kitchen or sunroom can really pull a design together!  We also love art in unexpected places, like this gold-framed print in a bathroom by Mandarina Studio!  It instantly adds a luxe touch.

Work with a pro

While you may have a favorite artist or period, it never hurts to consult a pro.  This could mean purchasing new artwork through a gallery, or having works that you already own reframed by a seasoned framing shop. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice, either – we often ask our framer’s opinion on what works best for both our clients’ pieces and our own.  These are people who have chosen to specialize in field that they love, and they have spent years refining their skills.  Utilize their experience and knowledge!

In addition, many of the galleries we work with will bring the art into your home so you can “try it on” for size.  Seeing art in a gallery and seeing in your home with your lighting, fabrics, and furniture can really make a difference as to how a pieces looks and feels in a space.

Selecting artwork with intention

Because you want to display the artwork you’ve collected, we recommend that you purchase with location and styling in mind.  Do you want a large, single focal point?  Perhaps you prefer the look of a trio of eclectic prints that tie together with coordinating frames.  A gallery wall allow you to bring together sketches, photos, and paintings in a unique yet cohesive way.  Arrangement can be dependent upon the size of the space and its function.  Working with a designer can help you refine your vision and style, as well as choose options that fit with the overall design of your rooms.
