Candle making at Wax + Wine

Not everything that the GSID team does is work; we also like to make time every quarter for fun team building activities.  In October, we visited a local DIY candle making bar called Wax + Wine to create our own custom candles.  The experience was so cool that we wanted to share it with you!

So, what happens at a DIY candle making class?

The candle bar is BYOB and they also allow snacks, which makes it even more fun.  A team member greeted us, led us to our table, and gave us our candle making supplies, including a jigger, a small whisk, and testing strips.  We also each received a clipboard, and followed our guide to the back area which can only be described as a candle lover’s paradise.

Candle making supplies and our clipboards for scent selection

These shelves contain row upon row of scented candles, grouped into categories like floral, seasonal, sweet, and earthy.  Armed with our clipboards, we began sniffing various candles, sharing the ones that we loved with each other.  To create a personalized candle, you can opt for one single scent or combine two for a customized fragrance.  As we narrowed down our favorites, we made notes on our clipboards ranking them.  After a lot of debate – okay, some of us were more decisive than others – we all made our final choices and headed back to our table for the actual candle making!

Our team member noted our scent choices and brought the corresponding oils to the table.  She then directed us to take our jigger and fill it with our chosen oils in whichever ratio we liked best.  For example, Nicole combined green tea and fresh bamboo with more emphasis on the green tea oil to lean herbal, while Andrea opted for white sage and rosemary with a dash of citrus for freshness.

We had a great time creating the perfect blends, asking each other’s feedback, and laughing at how well the scents we chose suited each other’s personalities.  Once we’d filled our jiggers, we added the oils to a small pitcher of soy wax and stirred gently.  Finally, we poured the mixture into the vessels we’d pre-selected and labeled with our names.  Our Wax + Wine team member took our candles to the back to set, and then brought them back to us beautifully boxed, labeled, and bagged to go home!
