One of the things I have come to appreciate most about residential design is that our work is rarely just about creating beautiful spaces. At its best, it provides clarity. It helps people understand what is possible, what matters most, and how to move forward with confidence toward a home that reflects the life they want to live.

That clarity has become increasingly important in recent years. Construction costs, labor availability, material pricing, and lead times continue to shift in ways that can be difficult to predict. More often than not, there is a significant gap between the moment a vision begins to take shape and the moment trades are pricing the work or materials are being ordered. What clients are feeling is not simply the cost itself, but the uncertainty surrounding it.

Recently, our team attended a “Cost of Building Symposium” hosted by Ernst Brothers. What struck me most was the openness of the conversation. Builders, designers, and industry partners were discussing a subject that was once approached cautiously, if at all. There was a shared recognition that transparency serves everyone. The more clearly we can discuss investment, expectations, and priorities from the outset, the better experience we create for our clients and the stronger the outcome becomes.

Why costs feel harder to predict

The building environment has become more complex than it once was. Material pricing continues to fluctuate, skilled labor remains in high demand, and economic factors can influence projects long before construction begins. Certain categories, including windows, paint, and structural materials, have seen notable increases over the past several years.

What makes this particularly challenging is timing. Decisions made during design may not be priced or purchased until months later. There is often a delay between imagining a space and understanding exactly what it will cost to build. While uncertainty cannot be eliminated entirely, it can be managed through thoughtful planning and open communication.

Why we budget early

At Glenna Stone Interiors, we develop preliminary budgets at the end of the schematic design phase because that is where vision and reality begin to meet. By that point, we have enough information to establish meaningful expectations while still maintaining flexibility to refine the project thoughtfully.

One of the most valuable ideas discussed at the symposium was the importance of involving builders early in the process. Design needs pricing to inform decisions, yet pricing requires enough design development to understand what is being built. When designers and builders collaborate from the beginning, clients gain a clearer understanding of priorities, opportunities, and tradeoffs before decisions become costly to reverse.

During the event, Ernst Brothers provided the analogy of thinking of the process as shopping without price tags; this certainly resonated with me. It is difficult to make confident decisions when critical information arrives too late. Early budgeting provides a framework that allows everyone to move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

Protecting what matters most

Another concept that resonated with me was the distinction between essential elements and desirable additions. Every project has features that are fundamental to how a family lives, along with ideas that can be explored if budget and priorities allow.

Establishing that distinction early helps clients focus on what will have the greatest impact on daily life. It also makes decision making less overwhelming. Rather than reacting to numbers after the fact, families can evaluate options through the lens of their goals and values.

I rarely encourage compromise on the elements that shape how a home functions and endures. Quality construction, thoughtful cabinetry, excellent lighting, and skilled craftsmanship continue to provide value long after a project is complete. Decorative elements can often evolve over time. The goal is not simply to spend less. It is to invest wisely.

The value of stewardship

One word that surfaced repeatedly during the symposium was stewardship. I found myself returning to that idea because it reflects how I believe design teams should serve their clients.

Stewardship means helping guide a project with care. It means communicating openly about tradeoffs, helping clients understand the implications of decisions before they are made, and ensuring that scope remains aligned with priorities. Most importantly, it means recognizing that every investment represents trust.

The most successful projects are not the ones without challenges, they are the ones where trust has been established before challenges arise. Good planning cannot eliminate every variable. What it can do is create confidence. When expectations are established early, priorities are understood, and the right team is involved from the beginning, the process becomes calmer, more focused, and ultimately more rewarding.

That, ultimately, is what good planning delivers: not just a successful project, but the trust, clarity, and confidence that make the journey as rewarding as the result.

What AI Can and Cannot Replace

As the design industry evolves, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: technology may change how we work, yet it cannot replace the human experience at the heart of exceptional interior design.

During a recent retreat with fellow design firm leaders, I was reminded how valuable it is to gather with peers who have spent years growing alongside one another professionally. Many of us have built businesses in parallel across the country, navigating similar challenges while continuously refining what luxury service looks like today. Over time, those relationships have evolved into something far more meaningful than networking. They have become a trusted exchange of insight, perspective, and shared experience.

There is tremendous value in stepping away from daily operations to benchmark with other firms and openly discuss the realities of running creative businesses at a high level. Our conversations extended far beyond technology. We discussed leadership, staffing, construction costs, client communication, and the operational systems that support exceptional service. What stood out most was the openness within the group and a shared commitment to strengthening not only our own firms, but the design industry as a whole.

One topic surfaced repeatedly throughout the retreat: artificial intelligence and its growing role in interior design. The perspective shared among many experienced firms felt balanced and thoughtful. Technology can absolutely improve efficiency, organization, and communication behind the scenes. Yet every designer in the room agreed that luxury interior design remains deeply personal work rooted in trust, intuition, creativity, and human connection.

At Glenna Stone Interiors, we believe innovation should enhance the client experience while protecting the collaboration and emotional understanding that define exceptional design. The future of luxury interior design lies not in replacing people with technology, but in using technology to create more space for creativity, relationships, and highly personalized service.

Where AI Can Support the Design Process

One of the most interesting parts of the retreat was hearing how firms are beginning to integrate AI into operational workflows to create greater efficiency behind the scenes. Conversations focused less on replacing creativity and more on supporting the structure required to run a thoughtful, client-centered design firm.

Training documents, onboarding systems, meeting summaries, scheduling coordination, and presentation organization all require significant administrative time. These are the areas where AI can become genuinely useful. If systems become more streamlined, design teams have more time to focus on creativity, collaboration, and the client experience itself. Technology should support creativity, not compete with it.

We also discussed how rapidly visualization tools and rendering software are evolving. AI-generated imagery has become increasingly sophisticated and can help communicate conceptual ideas more clearly during early phases of design development. Used thoughtfully, these tools can support exploration and help clients better understand possibilities within a space.

Still, every designer in the room acknowledged one important distinction: there is an enormous difference between generating an image and creating a home.

The Human Side of Design Cannot Be Automated

Design is deeply personal work. Long before a room takes physical shape, there are conversations happening about how clients live, what brings them comfort, how they gather, and what memories they carry into a new chapter of life. None of that can be extracted from a prompt.

What we do as designers is not simply assemble beautiful materials. We interpret emotion. We recognize hesitation that is never spoken aloud. We understand when a client is responding to a feeling rather than a finish. Those moments require empathy, intuition, and trust developed over time.

During the retreat, we spent as much time discussing relationships as we did technology. The most valuable insights rarely came from software recommendations. They came from hearing how another firm navigated a difficult conversation, refined a process, or strengthened a client relationship with care and intention.

In many ways, those conversations reinforced something increasingly important in today’s digital landscape: technology may improve efficiency, but it cannot replace shared experience, creativity, or genuine human connection. It cannot recreate the value of creative business owners gathering together to exchange ideas openly and challenge one another to grow.

That exchange reminded me that design has always been collaborative at its core. Even within a highly sophisticated business structure, our work remains profoundly human.

Why Collaboration Matters More Than Ever

What stayed with me most after returning home was not a specific software platform or operational strategy. It was the reminder that no meaningful business grows in isolation.

Our retreat was built around honest conversation among peers willing to share both successes and challenges openly. We discussed construction pricing, staffing, client expectations, leadership, and future planning. There was generosity in those conversations and a shared willingness to learn from one another rather than compete.

In many ways, that spirit feels like the most important counterbalance to the current conversation around AI. Technology can improve systems and support efficiency, but it cannot replace community, mentorship, perspective, or collaboration.

As our industry continues evolving, I believe the firms that will thrive are the ones willing to embrace innovation thoughtfully while remaining deeply connected to the human side of design. The future does not belong entirely to technology, nor entirely to tradition. It lives somewhere in the relationship between the two.

What clients ultimately remember is rarely the software behind the process. They remember how they felt during it. They remember whether the experience felt collaborative, calm, understood, and intentional. They remember whether the home reflected who they truly are.

That has never been automated.

A Dinner with Lasting Impact

I was in New York earlier this month for the Kips Bay Decorator Show House Presidents’ Dinner, and I left with a thought that felt both familiar and newly present. This industry, at its best, is inherently generous.

Not in a way that asks to be seen or applauded, but in a quieter, more foundational way. The people in this field show up when it matters. They give their time, their creativity, and their resources to something beyond the immediate work. It is not always visible from the outside, but it is deeply embedded in how this industry operates. Kips Bay has long been one of the clearest reflections of that.

What Kips Bay Has Always Stood For

For those who may not know the full picture, the Kips Bay Decorator Show House has been a cornerstone of New York design for decades, and its partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of New York is the reason it exists at all. Every ticket, every tour, every beautifully installed room supports programming for young people across the city. Designers and manufacturers donate their time, money and product to support this cause year after year.

Being there this year was a reminder of how design, when it is aligned with purpose, has the ability to extend far beyond the walls it occupies. That idea has always stayed with me.

People often assume interior design is about the finished room. In reality, some of its most important work happens far beyond what is ever seen.

A Model That Continues to Grow

It has also been encouraging to watch Kips Bay expand beyond New York into Palm Beach and Dallas. That kind of growth speaks to something deeper than geography. It reflects a model rooted in creativity and generosity, one that continues to resonate across different communities in a way that feels both natural and enduring.

There is something powerful about seeing this evolve from a singular event into something that feels more like a shared movement. It suggests a collective willingness, across the industry, to support work that serves a larger purpose.

How This Lives Within Our Work

On the train ride home, I found myself reflecting on how that same spirit has shaped our work at GSI over the years. Back in 2015, we partnered with Home of the Sparrow to complete a pro bono renovation of one of their homes, and that experience has stayed with me ever since.

Home of the Sparrow provides housing and support to women and children navigating some of the most difficult transitions of their lives. Being able to bring our skills to that work, to create a space that offers stability, dignity, and a sense of calm at a moment when that is often in short supply, felt aligned with the very best version of this profession.

Seeing the organization continue to grow and expand its reach in the years since has made that experience feel even more lasting. It reinforced something I had already begun to understand, which is that design has the ability to support people in ways that extend far beyond what we typically define as our work.

Each year since then, we have looked for ways to continue that effort. Our annual charitable event has become an important part of it, as has our holiday partnership with Dress for Success. Supporting women as they prepare to re-enter the workforce is a small but consistent way we can contribute, and it is something our team holds close.

The Thread Running Through All of It

What connects Kips Bay, Home of the Sparrow, and Dress for Success is not simply that they are worthy causes.  It is that they each represent a version of the same belief, which is that the skills and resources we are fortunate to have in this industry carry a responsibility to be used well and used broadly.

Design has a reach that extends well beyond the spaces we create for individual clients. It shapes how people live, how they feel, and in many cases, how they move forward. The most impactful work often happens when that reach is directed toward something larger than the project itself.

It is not something we speak about often, perhaps because it is not meant to be a headline. However it is worth acknowledging that this industry is deeply philanthropic by nature, and I feel genuinely grateful to be part of it.

That feeling is what people tend to describe as balance, though it rarely comes from a single decision or a final adjustment at the end. It begins much earlier, through a series of considered choices that guide how a space is experienced long before it is fully complete.

It Begins with How a Room Is Reimagined

That New Hope farmhouse carries with it a long and layered history, originally built in 1771 and expanded gradually over time, with additions on either side of the main structure that reflect different moments in its life. When we were brought in, our work focused on the family room, kitchen, and pantry, and the question was not simply how to update these spaces, but how to allow them to function more clearly while maintaining a sense of continuity to the home as a whole.

We spent time understanding how the rooms wanted to feel and flow, recognizing that a sense of openness with the natural light could be accentuated by our design.  From there, decisions began to take shape more intuitively. Crisp white cabinetry with glass fronts allowed that light to travel more freely, while the quartzite slab backsplash introduced movement and depth without competing for attention. Even the reconfiguration of the appliance layout was part of this same conversation, ensuring that the room would not only feel composed, but would also support the way our clients move through it each day.

None of these choices exist in isolation. Together, they begin to create a room that feels settled well before it is ever finished.

When Function and Feeling Align

One of the spaces I return to often in that home is the pantry, which has windows on three sides and offers views both toward the drive and out across the farm, creating a quiet connection to the landscape beyond. A bay window that naturally draws your eye, framed by a mosaic tiled wall that becomes a focal point without ever feeling overstated, and beneath it, the farmhouse sink sits in a way that feels both practical and considered.

What makes the space memorable is not any single feature, but the way everything has been allowed to relate to one another. The concealed coffee bar, with its antiqued mirrors inset into arched cabinetry panels, feels integrated rather than decorative, and the layering of texture and pattern throughout the room adds warmth without introducing visual noise. The result is a space that supports daily routines while still offering moments of beauty, where function and feeling come into alignment in a way that allows the room to fully settle into itself. 

When Proportion Becomes Intuitive

In another Bucks County project, the conversation unfolded differently, though the underlying principles remained consistent. This was a ground-up modern farmhouse designed to bring together two families, and from the outset there was a shared desire for something that felt sculptural, expressive, and slightly unexpected, which allowed us to approach the interior with a broader creative range.

We approached the interior finishes as the foundation for everything that followed, looking closely at how they supported the architecture and the overall character of the home, and how that language could be carried forward in a way that felt cohesive. That thinking extended naturally into the furnishings, where form was considered just as carefully as function, and each piece was selected for its presence and the way it related to the surrounding elements. Rather than simply filling the rooms, the goal was to create a composition where everything felt connected, allowing the spaces to take shape with a quiet sense of order. As those layers came together, the scale of each element began to resolve intuitively, emerging as a natural extension of the home itself rather than something imposed upon it.

When a home has that kind of clarity, proportion becomes something you feel rather than something you measure.

Harmony Without Repetition

Some of the most compelling moments in that Bucks County home come from contrast, where contemporary elements sit comfortably alongside materials that feel more organic and grounded.  This interplay creates a sense of movement within the space, without disrupting the overall composition. The goal was never symmetry, but connection, ensuring each decision relate to the next even when the elements themselves are distinct. 

This approach extended beyond the interior as well, as we worked closely with the landscape architect to ensure that the outdoor living and dining areas, along with the pool cabana, felt like a continuation of the home rather than a separate experience. By aligning the materials and maintaining a consistent design language, the transition between inside and out becomes fluid, allowing the home to feel cohesive in a way that is experienced rather than observed.

Where Thoughtful Choices Take Hold

Over time, I have come to understand that the rooms which feel the most complete are rarely the ones that were adjusted at the end, but rather the ones that were considered carefully from the beginning, where each decision builds on the last in a way that feels deliberate without ever becoming rigid.

In New Hope, that meant layering texture and pattern in a way that introduced warmth while maintaining a sense of lightness, allowing the space to feel both refined and welcoming. In Bucks County, it meant embracing materials and forms that reflected our clients’ desire for something distinctive, while still ensuring that the home would feel grounded and enduring over time.

These are not decisions that call attention to themselves. They gather over time, shaping the experience of the room until everything begins to feel fully aligned.

Where It All Comes Back Into Focus

I still think about that moment in the New Hope kitchen, standing in a space that was not yet complete and recognizing that it already felt resolved, the quiet confirmation of what we are always working toward, even when it is not immediately visible.

A room should feel immediately at ease, settled in a way that allows you to move through it easily, to live within it comfortably, and to return to it without hesitation.

When that happens, balance is no longer something you seek out. It becomes something you simply feel.

An Ask Glenna Perspective

Over the years, I have worked with clients at many different stages of life and in homes of every scale. While each project is deeply personal, I have noticed that the same underlying questions surface again and again. They are rarely about trends or specific pieces. More often, they reflect a desire for clarity and reassurance within a process that can feel both exciting and, at times, vulnerable.

The advice I give most often has been shaped by those conversations. It is guidance refined through experience, through observation, and through the quiet patterns that emerge when people truly begin living in the spaces we have designed together.

Q: What is the most important place to start when designing a home?

A: I always encourage clients to begin with how they want their home to feel, rather than focusing first on what they want it to contain. Images, furnishings, and finishes are useful tools, but on their own they are simply components. When they are developed thoughtfully and in relationship to one another, they create something more powerful… a feeling.

When we talk about how a space should support your daily rhythm, restore your energy, or foster connection, the design gains direction. Decisions become less about individual preferences and more about a shared intention. From that place, the home begins to feel cohesive because every choice is anchored in something deeper than aesthetics alone.

Q: Why do so many clients feel overwhelmed early in the design process?

A: Overwhelm often stems from trying to resolve every layer of the design at once. There are many moving parts, such as architectural decisions, furnishings, materials, lighting, and without a clear sequence, even exciting choices can begin to feel heavy.

Early in a project, my role is to create structure within that complexity. We begin with the elements that shape everything else: layout, proportion, and flow. Once those foundational decisions are thoughtfully resolved, the process naturally becomes more manageable. What once felt urgent begins to feel organized, and decisions unfold with greater clarity.

Q: How do you help clients make decisions they feel good about long term?

A: Much of it comes down to focus and to careful editing. Not every beautiful idea belongs in the same home, and not every option needs to be explored fully. Part of our responsibility is to refine the vision so that it remains clear and consistent from beginning to end.

When the field of choices is narrowed with intention, decisions feel steadier. Clients are not reacting in the moment; they are contributing to a larger, well-considered whole. Over time, that discipline is what allows a home to feel resolved rather than overdesigned, layered rather than crowded.

Q: How important is it to think beyond immediate needs when designing a home?

A: It is essential, because homes are not static and neither are the lives lived within them. A well-designed space should not only serve today’s routines, but also anticipate how those routines may shift over time.

We think carefully about how families grow, how priorities evolve, and how spaces might need to adapt. Layout, circulation, and material selections may not always command attention visually, yet they quietly shape daily comfort for years. Designing with that long view in mind allows a home to mature gracefully, supporting life as it unfolds rather than requiring constant correction.

Q: What ultimately defines successful design in your experience?

A: For me, successful design is not defined by a single moment or a dramatic reveal. It is defined by whether we have truly captured the feeling our clients hoped for and translated it into a space that reflects them in ways they may not have fully articulated themselves.

There is a particular moment I often witness: a client walking into their completed home and recognizing, almost immediately, that it feels aligned with who they are and how they want to live. The rooms support their daily rhythm, welcome family and friends with ease, and offer a sense of restoration at the end of the day.

When that happens, the design does not need to announce itself. It feels intuitive and composed, because every decision has been considered in relation to the whole.

And in many ways, that brings us back to where we began. If we start not with objects, but with feeling, and remain anchored to that intention throughout the journey, the result is a home that does more than meet expectations. It delivers the sense of ease and belonging our clients were seeking all along, often in ways that gently exceed what they imagined possible.

The work that begins before anything is drawn

Right now, we are deep in the early stages of a large new build for clients in New Hope. On the surface, very little appears to be happening. There are no finished rooms to photograph, no furnishings to install, no moments of reveal.

Yet this is where some of the most important work is unfolding.

Days are spent in conversation – about how the home will feel across seasons, how spaces should support both quiet routines and gatherings, how the architecture and interiors should speak the same language. We are studying how light moves across the site, how views will be framed, and how the home will be experienced as one moves from room to room.

None of this is visible yet. All of it matters deeply.

early decisions create the ceiling for what’s possible

In a project of this scale, early alignment is everything. Decisions made now quietly establish the language the home speaks.  

In New Hope, that has meant slowing the process before accelerating it – ensuring that spatial relationships feel resolved before details are layered in, and that architectural intentions are fully understood before interior concepts are refined.

When this work is done thoughtfully, rooms feel intuitive rather than impressive for their own sake; materials feel intentional and effortless, not decorative; and later decisions feel guided, not forced.

The goal isn’t speed. It’s confidence.

Editing before design ever becomes visible

Editing does not happen in isolation, and it does not happen without seeing and touching materials. In this phase, we are actively pulling finishes, textures, and references that align with the visual story beginning to take shape.

We explore materials in conversation with our clients, watching closely for what resonates. What draws them in. What feels right instinctively. These early reactions matter, because they reveal the emotional language of the home long before it is articulated in words.

From there, the editing begins.

It is not about narrowing for the sake of simplicity. It is about artfully combining what the client responds to most, refining relationships between materials, and shaping them into a cohesive whole. Each selection is considered not only on its own, but in dialogue with the others, so that together they support the feeling we want the home to evoke.

This is where intuition and discipline meet. Where abundance is refined into intention. And where the emotional experience of the home begins to take its clearest form, long before anything is installed.

Designing the experience, not just the home

The early phase also shapes something clients often don’t expect: how the process itself will feel.

In a complex new build like this one, thoughtful early planning creates space for ease later. It allows clients to stay connected without being consumed, informed without being overwhelmed. Decisions unfold in sequence, rather than all at once.

This doesn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of careful orchestration, clear communication, and a deep respect for the trust clients place in us from the beginning.

when the quiet work is done well

Months from now, when this New Hope home begins to take physical form, the early decisions will no longer be visible. What will be visible is the result: spaces that feel resolved, calm, and deeply considered.

That is the mark of good early design work – it disappears into the experience of living.

What clients rarely see is not a lack of activity, but an abundance of intention. And it is this invisible phase that allows everything that follows to feel exactly as it should. The most meaningful design work often happens long before it’s seen; it lives in the decisions that guide everything else.

This quieter palette allows the focus to shift away from color alone and toward the elements that give a home its soul: materiality, craftsmanship, and thoughtful layering.

Gratitude and Its Influence on Luxury Home Design

As the year comes to a close and the holiday season settles in, I find myself reflecting on how deeply gratitude is interwoven into the work we do at Glenna Stone Interiors. Global Design Takeaways from the 2025 Summit in Madrid

I recently returned from the 2025 Design Leadership Summit in Madrid – an unforgettable gathering of leaders in luxury interiors, architecture, and residential design from around the world. Walking through Madrid’s grand boulevards, historic palaces, and contemporary design studios was a reminder of how gracefully the city balances timeless tradition with modern expression.

A particular highlight was the Kravet dinner held at the home of Lorenzo Castillo. His home, saturated with color, pattern, vintage pieces, and an extraordinary array of art, revealed a powerful truth: beauty is often curated over time, shaped by history, memory, and an openness to collecting across styles and eras. It was an evening that celebrated craftsmanship, heritage, and the shared belief that exceptional design is a universal language.

Craftsmanship and Community as Pillars of Meaningful Design

This season also inspires deep gratitude for the extraordinary team of artisans, builders, custom cabinetry experts, and craftspeople who bring our design concepts to life. Their mastery transforms ideas into homes shaped by intention, comfort, and refinement.

One of the insights that stayed with me throughout my time in Europe was the profound appreciation for the old and the lived-in. The homes I visited radiated warmth and welcome, yet beneath that beauty was a depth of story – a respect for pieces that have been touched by time. It reminded me how meaningful layered interiors can be, and how much character is created when we honor what already exists.

And yes, they use real candles – everywhere. Dozens of them. There is something wonderfully unapologetic about embracing real flame, natural materials, and the gentle imperfections that come with authenticity. It underscores a philosophy that resonates deeply with me: that true luxury values what is genuine, tactile, and crafted by hand.

In Madrid, I was struck by how aligned these values are across cultures – particularly the emphasis on craftsmanship, sustainability, accessible design, and innovative material use. Whether expressed through custom millwork, bespoke furniture, or thoughtful lighting, the global design community is united by a commitment to creating spaces that are functional, personal, and enduring.

Design Inspirations Guiding Our 2026 Projects

Returning home as the holidays approached, I felt renewed clarity and creative momentum. The textures, materials, and philosophies I encountered in Madrid will undoubtedly influence our 2026 projects – introducing new layers of richness and global perspective while remaining true to our signature sensibility and devotion to timeless interiors.

Throughout the trip, I found myself paying close attention to the layers of detail that quietly shape a room. The way a furniture leg meets its frame, the intelligent integration of decorative lighting within a bookcase, or the thoughtful marrying of patterns – all of these small, intentional gestures contribute to spaces that feel considered, cohesive, and deeply personal. These nuanced moments of craftsmanship and design will inspire extraordinary details in our upcoming projects, reminding me that refinement often reveals itself in the subtleties.

As we plan for the year ahead, this infusion of inspiration reinforces how important it is to both honor tradition and embrace innovation – two forces that defined 2025 and will continue to guide our work in the months to come.

These moments really underscored for me that layering textiles is one of the purest mediums of the art we create in people’s homes.

In my work as an interior designer in Philadelphia, I’ve found that textiles are often the unsung heroes of a home. They’re not simply finishing touches; they are foundational elements that bring warmth, depth, and personality to a space. For me, textiles are where design becomes truly livable and where beauty meets comfort in the most meaningful way.
