Our favorite window treatments

Window treatments are such a vital aspect of the spaces that we design, although they might not be the first thing that you think about.  Not only do they add to the aesthetic of your room by creating definition at windows and doors, but they also provide light control and privacy.  We love blending form and function to elevate the overall tone of a space.  Let’s take a look at some of our favorite window treatments and how they lend the perfect finishing touch to our designs!

Drapes and curtains

Drapes and curtains are a classic in window treatments, thanks to their versatility.  These panels can be designed from almost any fabric with customizable lengths and widths.  This allows them to suit wide windows, French doors, and floor-to-ceiling windows perfectly.  The main difference between the two is the weight of the fabric, with “drapery” traditionally being made of heavier fabric.  However, we often consider drapes to be a catchall term, and have designed everything from airy sheers to heavier drapery panels for clients.

In our New Hope farmhouse’s family room, these beautifully patterned drapes (hung with custom, leather-wrapped rings) frame the stunning view of the farm’s rolling hills through the expansive window.

The panels in our Malvern breakfast room add artistic elegance and definition to the windows and doors that make up three walls of the nook.  The painterly tape trim is just so chic!

Roman shades

Roman shades offer a tailored solution with greater privacy, and can be customized with different fabrics and trims to suit the vibe of the space.  They’re characterized by a piece of fabric that is drawn up or down with a hidden cord, and can drape or fold as they are raised.

In our Dresher family room, silvery-patterned Roman shades anchor the large windows that overlook the woods behind our clients’ home.

A breezy, minimal Roman shade in our Wyndmoor mudroom is exactly right for the window that looks out to the pool.  Soft cotton filters the sunlight to keep the mudroom cool but not dim.

Shutters

When it comes to privacy and light control, shutters are a classic.  They’re an ideal choice in spaces that get full sun at certain times of day or need privacy in a snap.

Our Main Line family room gets quite a bit of sun.  This tends to create glare, especially in the summer, so we added shutters that can be easily adjusted with three young children in the space.

Privacy is key in bedrooms, which is why we combined shutters for practicality with drapes for style in our Chestnut Hill primary bedroom.  They are so simple to open or close, depending on the time of day or mood!
